Knocking/clattering at idle only...
On my 2006 MCSC, 10 months old, 6000 miles:
I've been hearing a knocking/clattering sound when the engine is idling, and I've discovered it disappears completely when I depress the clutch.
This only occurs while idling at a standstill (I first noticed it at drive-thru/bank windows about 2 weeks ago)
There is no valve clatter on acceleration, and the sound usually appears after the car has been driven some, but not necessarily when it's first started.
I was first worried that it was valve sound, but now that I've discovered depressing the clutch silences it, i don't think so. I have a date with my SA tomorrow.
Any theories??

It's an issue with the flywheel.. They have a replacement that is covered under warranty.. It fixed my problem completely.

Hey thanks all you guys! It's kind of a relief to hear that many reports of the same thing- and I'll be able to speak more intelligently tomorrow when I drop it off
It almost makes the car sound like a deisel, and I think it's too new to be making strange noises
I'll post what happens...

Here is the TSB on it.

If this is nothing more then a fix to replace intermitten noise. I'm not doing it.
1. It will tie up my car for atleast a week.
2. nothing like having them rip the engine out and goof something else up.

I dropped my car off at New Country MINI before work(an hour ride) and it was done before I got out of work.
So I took my 05 MCS in for a leaky engine mount Dec 26 and told the SA about the flywheel noise. She claimed that it was normal and that Mini has determined that the noise is normal and that they would not replace the flywheel.
This was not my normal dealer in Cincinnati, I was in Detroit for Christmas so I took it to Motor City Mini.
I plan to have it checked out in Cincy at my next oil service though I have not heard the sound in awhile....
If I wanted to force the issue, I would have pulled out the printed copy I had of the TSB but I didn't want to have it fixed while on vacation in Detroit.
Good luck, let us know what they tell you.

I would have 2 options
1. Take off work and spend the day eating free donuts and watching Italian job. Then hope they can get it done in 1 day
2. Drive down drop the car off and get a loaner then drive back when it is finished.
See this is only a hit and miss issue on my car and if it is nothing more then an rattle now and then i don't see the need. Sort of having open heart surgery for a bad haircut.
No they are great but they are 90 miles away.

In my situation, I was at 48k with 2k left until no warranty. I figured that I might as well get it done for free while I can.
They are replacing the dual mass flywheel with an improved part, just as the TSB indicates. I actually took it in Wed morning, they are doing the work today, and I should have it back tomorrow afternoon.
I got a nice PW/B 06 MCS auto with leather and premium as a loaner... it's been interesting using the steering paddles to shift (I couldn't live with an automatic though)
BTW- I posted this on MINI2 at the same time, and guess what? nobody helped...!

Got my beastie back today, man I missed her!! The MCSa I had as a loaner was just not the same car... I never heard the s/c whine and it seemed slowish.. I guess I can put that up to the 15% pulley and CAI my vert has- what a difference they make!!
They did replace the dual mass flywheel with the improved part, and apparently that's a $1500 rattle! No wonder they do it on a customer complaint basis only.
Well, the very bright side is it cost me nothing, and it was so warm today (middle of January no less) that I put the top down for the whole afternoon

I love my MINI more than all the other MINIs
(but don't tell them that)

the only reason your car was done later that day is because i know u bro.. or i woulda had to make u wait in line like everyone else
yeah ya know where we schedule u out like 3 weeks tell ya we're all booked can't fit ya in any earlier... not the o it's you bring it on down type a deal
It's funny that whenever I called, George said to bring it down whenever I wanted.
is that not just what i said... after your 30 calls he always called me to make sure it was cool u came down.
All it took was one call, George may have made 30 calls to you. Now stop hijacking the thread.
I'm curious... knowing it would be corrected free of charge, why would you allow it to continue?
It annoyed me tremendously, and I had it corrected at 6k or so-- and only 2 weeks after I first noticed it..... ??
