Exhaust Leak

heyo guys
i was wondering, does anyone know of some kinda sealent I can use in between some exhaust flanges?

I tried the copper sillicone, but its only rated to 700 degrees (pssht, that lasted a day)

I'd really rather stay away rom that muffler putty as its really hard to get off when you need to.

any ideas?

the flange is warped pretty bad. it has a gasket on it now... i still have amost a 1mm gap on one side of the flange

Normally, id pull it off and put it on the bridgeport and resurface it, but i really dont feel like doing it.

How about using 2 or 3 new gaskets depending on thickness and stacking them.
I always use .5" flanges rather than the easy to get but warp prone 3/8" ones/
Which flange is warped?

I actually had temporary luck using some crumpled metal foil rolled and shaped into a round crushable "gasket", but my "gap" was only 1-2mm. I'd go with the stackable gaskets theory, but if you have access to a Bridgeport and will be pulling the exhaust anyway, just go the extra 1/2 hour and be done with it. Good luck either way!

Yes, which flange is it? What are you working on? Is the pipe inside the flange flat or rounded like a header collector?

I’m using the sandwich method with good success, two new high end Victor Reinz gaskets with larger ID at each flange and two well used and modified (venturi swaged) correct size gaskets in the middle; the high sides remain but the low sides compress, both left & right and in & out.

And how much time have you spent fiddling with the easy way?

Wait a minute

What caused it to warp in the first place? Are you using fat washers under nuts or bolts against the flange to spread out the load?
If you mill it flat you may see it warping again because it's thinner and even more prone to warp.

Its warped because I tried to weld a 3 inch pipe to a flage that came of of a 2 inch system, the welds ran to the edge of the flange and got too hot before I noticed.

Its the flange on the front of the exhaust where it meets with tie header.

i'll see what happens with a few new gaskets today.

I'm usually not too keen on using stacked gaskets, but I guess I could give it a try and see if it holds...

Could you have the flanges milled down at a local muffler shop or machine shop. This would be like starting fresh. You could have the matched perfect and then hopefully the gasket will work.

I think I got it.

I used two OEM metal gaskets and its a pretty tight fit. hopefully it stays tight.
