Just got back from having the strut bolt recall taken care of. 2 service techs and the service manager took a look at the fan mod. They agreed the screen mesh would be fine as is (as far as air flow goes). They did note that they've had a few Mini's come in with objects stuck in the fan, though it wasn't a real common problem. If nothing else, I feel a little more secure about it.

Great idea but what happens when a plastic bag or something like that gets stuck on the grill and causes the fan to over heat and blow the fuses just like before. It can happen. Thats why a skid plate is the way to go IMO. It protects the whole under neath of the engine not just the fan.

I personally think a skid plate is overkill in normal driving conditions. As stated earlier in this thread, I've driven cars a lot lower than the Mini without incidence. Also, it slows down the process of changing oil and rules out quick visual inspections of the underside of your motor and tranny. I guess it all depends on which school of thought your adher to.

That is a great mod! Very clean. If something were to get caught or wedged on the P/S fan, it's going to happen, one way or another. The mesh does look great though! Thanks for the idea.
