ECU re-flash. Damn!

So I brought my car in to the dealer for a few things and the SA recommended I re-flash with whatever the latest software is at this point, which I think he said was 23.01(?). He said that they switched over to a completely new map at some point since my car was last flashed and it was much improved over the old 3.X series. I was reluctant to do it as it weren't broke, if you know what I mean, but he kept saying, "I strongly recommend it. I think you will be VERY happy." So I'm only a couple hundred miles into it, but damn! It really feels great. MUCH better throttle response, more power througout and it seems like my rev limit is higher. I swear I have another 10-15hp at the top end. Assuming it only gets better as it adapts to my leaden foot, the end result should be outstanding. My car is an 04 JCW with the 210 upgrade. One thing I'm not ruling out is that the dealer who did the upgrade did not reflash me properly at that time, and that now I finally have a map optimized for the bigger injectors and air box. But I'm not asking questions at this point, just driving the **** out of it.

I need to talk to my SA as well, it seems. Can you verify what software revision it is?? I have an early build 05 JCW. Thanks

What would be the most recent version for an 06 MCS?

After all my searching here and on MINI2 it seems that the mallet is the best way to go.
thanks

Quick search on NAM resulted in a link to mini2's How-to section:

1) With the key in the off position press and hold the speedo reset button, turn the key to position one and the screen will say test and a number.

2) Go through the list by pressing the reset button upto test 19 and then wait.

3) The display should then say"log i-off" then "log i-on" over and over again....when "log i- off" appears again press the reset button ....and now you are in the system software.

4) Scroll upto 21.0 Software reset. When reset appears press the button again and you will get a beep and you're speedo needle may vibrate a little (this is normal).

5) Turn ignition off then back on to position 2 for 10 secs then start your car and hey presto its done.

Is this update for an 06 MCS as well? Or JCW only? I am coming up on my 10K service, I will have to inquire.

thank you!

So I assumed that the "adaptation" was a good thing. No?

I've been very hesitant to allow the dealer to reflash me whatsoever. I still have like version 32 or 33. I hate the DSC, so I hear the new set-up for that was much better, but that they also dumbed down the throttle response in response to yo-yo complaints, which I just wasn't willing to give up.

Any chance the JCW reflash would benefit me a little bit? Might be worth a shot I suppose, as long as the dealers willing to play ball with me.

Sooo clever. And yet so evil! Very cool idea (although I like the whole mallet reset, too).

I have no idea who is right, but .....

The instructions on the ECU reset have been "refuted" by a MINI Tech. He posted a note somewhere on here, saying that the instructions just get you a "dashboard" reset, and the ECU can only be reset by some specialized MINI servicing program.

So you can't just disconnect the battery for a while?

There are parts that are lost and parts that aren't...

the fuel trims will go, as will SOME but not all OBD codes. But some things won't go, and they require a DME reset that isn't done by the dash trick. I wish I had a list of everything that was covered by each method, but it doesn't exist.

I don't know if the reset button discussed will make that much difference. But what they hay, report back what you find!

This is correct, your only resetting the instrument cluster electronics with the dash reset, not the DME. Only the dealers GT1 and a few expensive pro level scan tools can reset the engines adaptation values.
NOTE to CVT owners: do not let anyone reset your DME adaptations, it will f*** up your shift program and requires a really mean test drive to get it to shift again.

Sadly these boys are right. Even a DME reset for other items or the same version will pretty much have the same efffect, it feels great while it lasts. I've heard of BMW techs explain that you're limited to 14 or so updates before haivng to replace the DME as well. Thats how it goes on the MINI, I wish we could do something like what ken has for his G35, but I think the closest option is aftermarket or finding out how to do custom map on your own, but hat takes moeny time and lots of knowledge and a preferably a personal dyno.
