Slight hesitation - engine map?

I went through the first 20 pages or so and didn't find a thread on this (and maybe I'm not searching on the right terms with the search function), but:

In my 2005 Mini Cooper S in 1st gear, at about 2700/2800 rpm, I notice a slight hiccup while accelerating. I wouldn't exactly call it a "miss" because it doesn't really cut out, it just... lags for a fraction of a second. It's most noticable on 1/2 to 3/4 acceleration, at full throttle it's less noticeable. I THINK I can feel it 2nd and 3rd gear as well, but it's much milder.

It feels like a design/mapping issue more than a problem, per se, but I wonder if anyone else has noticed this and tried to track it down?

I'm a new, first-time MINI owner but have heard from more experienced owner's that this is just how it is. It's not awful but noticeable.

I've heard the best solution is a 15% pulley and a intake cooler (forgot what they're called).

I know that both of these cost several hundred dollars (all together) but one mod is cheaper (I think the pulley) and perhaps that would address the problem.

My 2 cents!

I had a similar symptom on my MC. A very consistent slight miss (always at the same rpm range, around 4000-4500). It ended up being a bad coil, but did not throw a code until it fried the ECU. I realize you could be on quite the wild goose chase, but it isn't too hard to swap coils if you know another MINI owner, and is pretty easy for a dealer to attempt.

Of course, since you have an S this could be a boost problem or something else I know nothing about!

Good luck solving the problem.

For what it's worth, my 2005 MCS does the same thing. I noticed it today when I was easing off the throttle at level speed, 5th gear. Not a real miss...just a brief hesitation.

I write about the phenomena in the Drivetrain thread:

Thanks, DMH. Since I need to keep one eye on the SCCA rulebook for mods, it's beyond anything fixable for me. Besides, I only spend time on the street at part throttle...

Are you driving with the AC on? I've noticed this hesitation on my 06 MCS when the AC is turned on, but it goes away with the AC off.

If you have the auto climate control, you might experiment with shutting off the AC and seeing if that takes care of the hesitation.

Good luck.
