What Is This Leaky Part Under My Hood?

I noticed that something under my hood recently went leaky and I have no idea what it is or what caused it. Since I'm beyond my warranty, I was hoping you might be able to help me out. Any idea? thanks!

Engine Mount. Yours has failed and should be able to be replaced under warranty.

Uh.... looks bad !

This is the motor mount engine damper and as you can see it is an oil based damper !

You should replace it quite fast... otherwise your engine-vibrations will get transfered to you chassis *brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr*

It maybe up to the dealer if they will replace it with the car being over 50k.

Well, a friend over here in Germany got the same problem and BMW fixed it for free and his car was nearly three years old. So if you got a well and fair dealer it should be no problem.

If not, the part should cost something about 70$.

They said there's a two week if I schedule an appointment. I guess I'll have to have it towed in.

That may get them to repair it sooner or, they may just let it sit for a week.
Plus you'll probably kill any chance of getting replaced under warranty.

I'd just schedule an appointment. Probably won't hurt anything to drive it until then. Just don't hammer it.

That "new" engine damper's design doesn't look that good...

I've seen a lot of MCS back in Montreal with that problem...

You should see the old one (02-05). It looks like it is being held together by a shoelace (just picked one up this morning for my 03 MCS - should have taken pictures). Although not as common as the new design, the old ones leak as well...

Clean it up quick

Once you've shown it to your MA, see what you can do about getting it cleaned up. I've heard that the stuff is a real bear to get off after it's had a chance to settle in.

Here is mine. Although rubber, they are oil-filled. Got it replaced today while getting a WMS 15% pulley.
PS: Dont feel bad... Service Adviser told me the same thing

Hey I just noticed a puddle under my car this morning. Popped the hood and my damper/mount is leaking as well. My car is an 05 with 26k miles so it is for sure going in under warranty. Problem is I am 300 miles from home and will not be returning until October (though the car will be sitting from this Sunday until then).

Is it ok to drive it until Sunday, then park it, then drive it 300 miles to get back home?

How does this happen?

I don't think it hurts anything. I drove thousands of miles after first noticing mine leaking before I could get it replaced. I couldn't feel a difference between the old part and the new one. Maybe it hadn't leaked out completely?

Are they replacing the leaky one with the same design?

I just called the Service dept at Detroit Mini and asked if I could, by some miracle, get the car in today or tomorrow to replace this. Of course they were booked until the end of August but it was worth a shot. I asked her (service advisor) if I could drive it with the leaky mount and she advised against it. Unfortunately I have no other option.

Oh well, I hope it doesn't cause another issue.

I think it depends on how much it leaked out - as you mentioned. Mine must have been completely empty to the point where I "realized" that the car was shaking unusually when starting it the first time. Moreover, taking off at lower rpms (unintentional) exhibited rattles from the engine compartment (engine rattle being transferred to the chasis). Apart from these annoyances, I dont think it hurts anything either.
Good luck with the repair!

I'm wondering how many Mini's have had this problem and if there is any after market part that would be better. I just discoverd the leak this morning on my 05 Mini S after noticing an oily substance doted all down the pasenger side of my car as well as the boot totally coverd with the what looked like oil. My car is pepper white and when I was washing my car I noticed that this stuff was not coming off. Could'nt clay bar it,couldn't get it off with Z5 cleaner wax. Made an appointment with the Dealer this morning to fix it and told them that they would need to get this stuff off as well as fix the part obviously. After talking with Octainguy I might hold off on there bodyshop trying to get it off and wait for Octainguy to look at it.

I'm pretty sure this is a known issue, as WRR discussed the fact a while back that they have redesigned replacements for the failed mounts. So it's not to the point that they are recalling them, but they are replacing them with redesigned parts.
