clutch rattle while in neutral with peddle released
clutch rattle while in neutral with peddle released
As described above, I have had clutch rattle for the past 10,000 miles. As expected, when I took it to the dealer the service writer indicated it was "typical" clutch noise, something to the effect that the plate is clattering against the flywheel. Strangely, when I received my paperwork the dealer states the noise could not be reproduced. Smells of a brush-off. I have read quite a few thread on mini2.com with the same problems but with different solutions and repairs.

There are soooooo many with this "characteristic". Just look around, you'll find them. Although I had mentioned this and got the "typical" answer from the dealers, the clutch on my 03 MCS ended up being replaced twice due to other symptoms/problems. Go figure...
coopster,
The problem is in the clutch release bearing, and is very common. It probably won't give you any real trouble other than being annoying, but if the car is going out of warranty soon, you may want to "expidite" the clutch wear so they will replace the clutch assembly under the maintenance program. (I did NOT tell you to do that), but I'm sure the tech will love to have the work.
