Pulley Puller...

for those who have done a pulley swap before, do you think this would get the stock pulley off?

I already have this tool, but I dont want to stay stuck with the engine lifted and unable to get the stock one out. Since I'm in Montreal, there are no MINI performance shops that I can borrow a puller from...

You can get it off with a zip-code input window? WOW!

Sorry for the sarcasm...

It's hard to tell from the pic in the link. Even if you can get the jaws on the pulley there's really nothing to keep them there while you're cranking on the center bolt.
You could easily modify that puller to take the pulley off, if you have a decent metal/machine shop guy around.

Tried it, Don't Recommend It!

Yes - I attempted to remove my stock pulley using almost the identical puller. If I showed you what the pulley looks like now, you would run screaming to Randy Webb for a proper puller.

I would strongly recommend that you get the tool that is designed for removing that specific pulley. It is unbeleivable how tight the stock pulley is on there, and (in my case at least) the 3 jawed puller just curled the pulley in at those three points of contact. The tool folks like Randy use pulls in contact with the grooves all the way around the pulley.

In the end, mine came off, and my new Alta 15 is in place and working well. There were a good couple of hours there, though, where I was hugging my knees in the corner of the garage and rocking myself hoping I hadn't blown 'Ol Coopie to smithereens...

Not sure where you are...

But you might ask around for a local one to borrow....

Or you can rent one from Mini Mania for $1 if you buy the pulley from them at the same time....

I ended up buying a deluxe puller from OutMotoring. A nice quality product. It made the job so easy and comforting when removing the stock pulley it was well worth it (in my mind)..

I have read about others trying to use the 3 arm pullers... The engine will need to be lifted higher, and more parts will need to be removed to make clearance for the 3 arm puller to grab the pulley... All adding up to more time & potential problems.

Besides after your pulley upgrade - your friends will want help too. It would be nice to have the right tools in the box...

Good luck... in the end it is worth the effort...

I used one just like that.

It beat the hell out of the stock pulley, but it got it off.

You can get one for free at Autozone, just leave a deposit and you get it all back when you return it.

The only other part you need to remove is the tensioner. It was super easy and the engine didnt need to be lifted any higer than when using a Alta or simmilar puller.

Really, what does it matter what it does to the stock pulley? Are you ever gonna press it back on? Didnt think so.

Hey there,

I know my pulley was on there super tight - I used the puller from Mini-madness - it worked as advertised, no problems. The whole job took about 2 hours.

You can rent one from ALTA for $19.99. You pay the $200, but $180 is refunded when you return it.

WMS loans out their pulley puller for free when you buy a pulley from them.

The possible problem is what do you do if you destroy your pulley while trying?
1) You need to use the car before you figure out another method to safely remove it
2)now none of the other pullers will fit over the pulley
3)If you are not pulling it straight off you can possibly bend/distort the shaft
4)are you in a gambling mood?

lol

You guys do what you want, blowing money on useless tools that you dont need to finish the job.

My pulley install cost me under 100 dollars out the door.

That tool is doing what its supposed to do, removal of pullies, steering wheels or gears. You guys are just used to being raped and tricked into buying a tool you dont need.

Well, to close this thread off I would like to share my pulley swapping experience from last night.

So, the 3 arm puller had to be converted to a 2 arm puller because I did not want to lift the engine higher. We applied enough pressure to start warping the pulley and left it like that. I then took a small propane torch and started the heating process. After about 1 minute I heard a loud bang, and the pulley was unseized. We kept pulling and it came of smoothly after that

So, other then being very careful with the torch, it was pretty straight forward.

As for the performance gains, I’m not very impressed. I noticed the difference but it was no dramatic. A passenger who rides along pretty often with me could not notice the difference. It's not bad but its way too overrated on this site.

Get a "genuine" puller tool...

It is well-worth the $$ (especially for free when rent from Webb, or 20$ fro Alta).

I bought one and lend it it many people back in Montreal.

The last think you want to do is to ruin your supercharger's shaft using crappy tools...

well, the tool is pretty much designed for that purpose and I have to say it worked rather well. I just wanted to let everyone know that you really dont need the special tool.

By the way, do you know of any "track days" happening in the montreal area?

I just did mine too, installed the madness 15% pulley and changed my oil, i rented their puller and it worked great, really great. Did you find it a pain to release the belt tension, ugh mine was a b!t$h, spent forever trying to release the tension!

I noticed a difference, mostly the added torque. but the gain wasn't that great as you said! i think it needs a cai to compliment the pulley. I was planing on making a intake but i don't think i have enough time anymore, i have to leave for school and leave behind all my cool shop tools. Might just buy the madness intake, or maybe the alta, haven't decided yet.
