Removing Air Cleaner

Trying to get to the air cleaner element on my 04 MC and can't believe how much is attached that has to be taken off. First, do you have to take the large hose with the ridiculous clamp off to get to it. How do you get it off and then re-clamped? My VW TDI has a much better clamp soloution than this-looks like a big wire tie would work better if clamp is destroyed upon removal. Second, some electrical wires are wire tied to the right side. What'sthis for and can it be removed? Any help will really be appreciated.

I havent even looked under a MC hood, but as for the intake, those clamps are really hard to get on. Once I took them of, I didnt put them back. I bought the ones that you tighten with a screw driver or wrench.

Dunno abou the wire harness. Never seen it!

If this is the stock air cleaner you are referring to, first, loosen the clamp that is around the intake hose, mine is an 05 and can be loosened by turning the screw on the clamp. Once its loose, slide it off the air-box, then there are two torx screws on the right hand side of the air box cover. Loosen them about 5 turns, you should now be able to slide the air-box lid off to the right a little bit (on the left side there are two clips that the tabs on the air-box lid slide into) lift the air-box lid and your filter is sitting there, just lift it out. Hope this helps, good luck.

WOW! Got in there and man is that a dirty mess. 04 MC, 26K and I doubt if the owner before me ever changed it. Vacumed it out and cleaned out all the gunk etc. Don't know yet if it will affect performance but have a new drop in on its way. Is there a pre-filter in the air chamber coming to the airbox?

Filter change

no, there is no pre-filter in the system, sounds like you got the air-box opened OK,

Just make sure that you don't snap the little hooks on the engine side of the top of the airbox. I tried to not lift the top of the air box up too high but ended up snapping the tab/hook on the closest to firewall side.

what's the trick on getting the hose clamp to close? It's got that wierd snapper dealy and I'd rather keep it stock than get a screw hose clamp (those I wish it was like that stock). Thanks in advance.

EDIT:

Found out, going to have to buy some tools - https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ad.php?t=44650

I had bought a screw in type hose clamp but found out the clamp itself was too wide to fit. I had tried regular pliers initially and it doesn't work because the angle of the pliers slip off too easily. I found a channel lock plier (also known as adjustable or slip joint pliers) in my tool box and decided to give it a try and the original clamp snapped right in.
