I just took a look at the manual I downloaded for the 'S'.

It says:

"The window on the front passenger side cannot be closed automatically"

Page 28.

I think this is so you can't accidently trap your passener's, kid's, dog's head in the window while fumbling for the foglights or somthing!

So... does anyone's (in the US) driver's side window have the auto-up function when the engine is running?

Has anyone gone to the dealer to have it enabled -- since the manual says it does?

It's only a bother on rainy days when you have to pull away from a tollboth -- kinda hard to shift and close the window!

My dealer told me that they don't have the "Programming Computer" so they can't do anything like add daytime running lights!

I dont think this is a dealer option. I think it's just supposed to work.

The manual says just briefly tap the switch up to automatically close the window. A brief tap again should stop it.

I would be more than glad to try it but I dont get my mini until the end of August

I have not been able to get mine to close automatically. I haven't asked the dealer about it either, so I don't know if they can set it to do that....I'm guessing that it's just a feature that they didn't actually put in the car.

On a related note, the manual also says that you can open both windows and the sunroof by holding the key to the left in the door (the reverse of the closing trick). This doesn't work on my Cooper. Has anyone gotten that to work?

Where does it say anything about "automatic up" in the manual (at least from the inside)? From the inside, I can't make the windows go up automatically (which would be a great feature at the toll booth and in the rain, as you say). If the car is parked with the windows down, if you turn the key to lock the car, and hold it, the windows will go up.
I have a Cooper, by the way, not an S. Just got it Friday and LOVING it!

My keys didn't open the windows when turned counter-clockwise either!

..but I have since had the key programmed to open the windows instead of releasing the boot. The boot release feature was kind of useless + i wasn't able to close the boot 50% of the time because it would make the latch mechanism spazz out. the only downside is that supposedly the counter-clockwise key turn cannot be enabled to lower the windows if the remote is programmed to..

For those of you that haven't gotten your Coopers yet, make a list of the features you want so you can have it programmed before pickup -- also make sure you verify it does all the things you want! I had to pay $15.95 to have the remote window open (comfort opening) function programmed since I had it done at a different dealer than I bought it from.

I hope I don't mess this up (first message I've posted), but I read a message from someone indicating you could "download" the manual for the Cooper S. Could someone help me with the URL, or location on MINI Cooper OnLine where I could download the manual? My car is about 8 months out, and I have plenty of time to read.

Thanks!

Andrew, My dealer showed me a mini they enabled, seems they don't come set from the factory they do it at the dealership when it arrives. He told me he would set mine up when it arrives ( including the auto sunroof opening with the key also) unless I told them not to. Well who's he kidding I already warned my wife it's going to be just like the VW commericial. Friar

David,
Once you have a production number, you can get a login into the MINI Owners Lounge. When you register, just put 0 for the mileage and your order date for the delivery date (you can change them later). After enter in the 'Lounge' click on 'Your MINI' and then click on 'Owner's Manual'. From there you can download the manual. Happy Motoring.

Thanks very much for the info on how to get the manual. My problem is, that I have about 3 months (estimate) before my name comes up to PLACE the order (Long Beach MINI). Then another 3 months before delivery. If there is a problem with downloading, or making a copy of the manual BEFORE I get my production number--- I don't want to ask anyone to do something that is in conflict with MINI's guidelines. However, it's not uncommon now for vendors to PROVIDE their manuals to prospective owners. I obtained electronic versions of owner's manuals for my Polar Heart Rate Monitor, and several different cameras in this manner (helped me in deciding on specific models & options).

So, let me restate my question. Is it possible to obtain an electronic copy of the MINI Cooper S Owner's Manual; before I have my production number? Six to eight months is a long time to wait! Again, I'm not asking for anyone to violate any rules... I'm just trying to find out if the information is available.

And, again, thanks for all of your help. This site is really helpful in getting first-hand information, and configuring the car I plan to order.

(ps: if you wish to email me offline, you can reach me at: davidgerhardt@mindspring.com)

The MINI comes set with defailt settings and the DEALER needs to reset them and activate or deactivate any of these "COMFORT" features for you. When I got my MINI I couldn't figure out why some things worked and some didn't. I called the dealer and they said to make a list of what you want activated / deactivated and they can reset the car. I now have the auto open of windows/roof with remote key and door key, "COMFORT "open with inside door lock toggle switch and deactivated the boot open since it is stupid. THERE IS NO AUTO CLOSE ON U.S. CARS. It is Illegal for saftey issues. Any dealer should be able to set these for you, took 1/2 hour for mine.

Weird, since the '02 Maxima and '02 Jags, I rent from Hertz on a regular basis (every week) both have this feature. Is BMW just playing it safe? I hate being penalized because of the sue happy idiots out there. Tort Reform NOW!!

Refer to the "Vehicle Memory" thread in the "Beneath the Bonnet" forum for loads of details about the programmable features on the MINI Cooper. Note that you can have the remote set to open the roof/windows (instead of releasing the hatch) and still have the key close all three from the driver's exterior door lock. And, it is true that US owners can't have the driver's window set to close automatically. I've been told that the reason some US cars have this feature is because their window mechanism includes a safety brake in case there's an obstruction. There is no brake built into the MINI's windows so not allowing the auto close is BWM's solution.

Study your Vehicle Memory options and call ahead to your dealer to make certain they have the software. Since you might be charged for programming, it's good to have everything figured out beforehand. And, you may know more about this stuff than they do.

Do you have more detail on this? My wife's X-Type has auto up so it would seem that regulations allow it (and on a related note - the issue of rear fog lights was discussed some time back with the same general consesus that US regulations do not allow this feature. But guess what, the X-Type has these too).

The New Beetle that I used to have was equipped with auto-up. If something got caught in the windows, they were programmed to halt. Coming from another German car...

The auto up feature is available on cars with electric windows that have a pressuresensor and clutch mechanism that will either stop the window or cause it to go back down if there is an obstruction. I have been told that the MINI lacks the sensor in the window mechanism that would enable this option to be programed. Thus making it aginst U.S. regulations to have it as an option. I do not know if the foglights are aginst regulation but I do know that they are not offered on U.S. Spec MINI's only on the Eure specs, It is a law here in europe that cars must be equipped with a rear fog light.

Rear fog lights are not offered in MINIs sold in the US & Canada. I don't know if this is the case of MINIs sold in Mexico, as these would be much closer to the European spec models (Any Mexican owners can confirm this??).

However, the rear fog bulb is there (Dormant). However, since MINIs sold here don't get the rear fog light, hence we don't have a full bank of toggle switches either, making this feature largerly inaccesible for North American owners.

Current MINIs sold in the US and Canada, do not have the auto-up window feature due to the lack of an effective fail safe sensor to prevent further closure if an obstable (Hand, head) is encountered.

I really like the auto down feature in both windows and really haven't long for the missing auto-up feature.

Do you mean to tell me your on a waiting list just to place an order? I was placing an order with my salesman when a customer whos Mini was in stock called him and had to cancel the order. The salesman looked at me and asked me if I wanted it? Hell yes I told him. Took delivery two weeks ago Wednesday. I was going to order a yellow one but the indy blue with a white top one I bought looks great too.
