ECU problem part 2
ECU problem part 2
Hey if anyone can help me here I'd be greatly appreciative.
I posted on here a month ago about a 2004 base model Mini that I bought that needed repaired with some front end damage. Sometime after the car was wrecked, and before I took possession of it, the ECU was stolen.
Thanks to you guys on here giving me good advice, I didn't buy a used ECU to put in it, and I did buy a new one.
Well..... I took it to the BMW dealer to program the new ECU, and they called me telling me they can't program it because the ECU is NOT getting any power.
They have now spent 2 hours trying to trouble shoot it (at $100 an hour), all with no success.
I haven't been able to talk to them as I have been out of town with work, so until I talk to them, I don't really know what all they have tried.
I was hoping to get some input on here so I'll be prepared to ask the right questions when I call them on Monday.
I thought this was going to be a simple 1 hour programming job but now it's turning out to be a nightmare.
I can say this, when I put the battery in the car and hooked the positve cable to the post, I noticed it was being drawn from heavily. (sparks). That was with NOTHING turned on in the car. I have also had to charge the battery a couple times because of this. BMW doesn't think that has anything to do with the problem.
Also, in the process of repairing the car, I have had to reconnect several things like the headlight wiring harness, horns, etc etc. but to my knowledge there is no damage to any of the wiring harnesses that I looked at.
I should also add that everything in the car works when I turn the key on. (lights radio odometer, etc).
Sorry this is such a long post, but I'm trying to give as many details as I can think of to help explain the situation.
Again anyones input would be greatly appreciated, including you Barnabas.

I don't like the fact that when you hook the battery up you are getting sparks ( highly visable sparks mean trouble ) . The dealer should be able to power up the ECU via the wireing diag in the manual, then go backwards. This realy sounds like a crushed harness somewhere from the seats foward. Was any welding done to the car? Sheetmetal screws used to mount body panels? Holes drilled for clecos?
