P0693 Fault Code - know what this is?

For six months my '03 Cooper Service Engine Soon light keeps coming on - about every 50 - 100 miles. After many trips to the dealer with no results, I bought a scan/reset tool. The codes are always the same - P0171 (too lean) and P0693. I can't find a reference for what this second code is. The car seems to run perfectly. Any advice would be appreciated.
Pete

Too lean can be caused by many things, such as:
1) Exhaust leak upstream of o2 sensors (sucking in air).
2) Primary O2 sensor bad (how many miles are on the o2 sensors?)
3) ECU flaking out
4) Wiring harness bad

Thanks for all the info. This car is stock (no mods that I know of). I bought it used in December. The SES light came on just after I bought it - so off to the dealer I went. They replaced the fan and Primary O2 sensor. SES came back on soon after I got it back. Another 100 mile trip to the dealer and they told me it was just a one-time misfire and reset the SES. Before I got home it was on again, so back to the dealer. They said it was a bad connection and replaced some wiring. On the way home it came on again. Back to the dealer and some other sensors were replaced. Light comes on again next week. Then the dealer they gave me a loaner and kept the car for four weeks. They kept telling me that the computer needed an update but they could not get the software to work. Then they called and said they found a part (some shield under the car) that had been replaced by the previous owner with a non MINI part and my warrenty was void - so now I am paying for all these trips. They repaired something (I will have to look at the bill when I get home) that cost me $400 and told me that would solve the problem with the SES light. The light was back on after another 100 miles. I bought a scan/reset tool and made a log of the errors since I got the car back at the end of March. It is always the same two codes P0171 and P0693. The car only has 12,000 miles on it and seems to be running great.

The person before you installed a different shield under the car. I am assuming a splash guard of some sort. I don't see why that would cause any issues.

Even though it is probaly hard for them to tell who installed the plate.

Dang, so sorry Peter. I've been complaining on my numerous trips back and forth, but you have got it much worst. Atleast my 04 gives me 400 miles between check eng lines and going into FORD mode, found on road dead.
Only have 18K so worried they won't get it figured out before the warranty expires.
