Normal ticking noise?

Hey guys,

Just wondering if you all get a kind of constant ticking noise from the engine when its at idel, especially cold. I have an 05 with only like 4500 miles on it and when I showed someone they thought the engine was knocking already? Is this noise normal?

Thanx

i had that exact problem, my ticking was only at idle and very pronounced when it was cold. i took it too the dealer and i think they replaced the crank pulley either that or the flywheel, man i can't believe i can't remember the problem, haha. i think the flywheel would make more sense though. i thought it was the throw out bearing at first because when i would depress the clutch the ticking would go away, but i was wrong. anyways they replaced the crank pulley or flywheel (sorry i can't remember) and then they replaced the clutch for good measure.
no ticking anymore.

good luck

Are you sure it's actually coming from the engine and not under the dash inside the passenger compartment? I ask because I had a ticking up under the dash that I could only hear when stilling still with the engine running. It sounded like that stopwatch sound on the tv show 60 minutes or a bomb. :P Took it to the dealership and they said it was the fuse box, they had never seen anything like it. They replaced the fusebox and relays and it went away.

That pronounced ticking at idle is more than likely just your fuel injectors. Open the hood and see if the ticking sound is eminating out from under your intercooler. That's just how fuel injectors sound. Your problem may be something else, but alot of people think there is something wrong with their cars when it's just fuel injectors clicking. If you listen carefully when you give it full throttle as the rpm's come up to about 3000 rpm and the duty cycle of the injectors really get going you can hear the ticking. Plus when the car is cold and the oil is all in the pan and hasn't circulated and heated up good, you will get a little valvetrain noise. That's just to be expected.

I noticed that the first time I started my car (used with 8500 miles). The dealer said that was normal for Mini's. Of course this was the sales person, and I had already paid her...
I have had any problems with it.

You're certain it's from the engine and not the transmission? If yes, than my be perfectly normal. As carl said, probably fuel injectors, or maybe just "happy valves"

The tranny is another story, common issue on the 05s was the 2-piece flywheel, often changed under warranty. Way to tell, push the clutch pedal in, ticking goes away, release the ticking comes back. Had that problem on mine, replaced flywheel/clutch no-issues since.

If your "clicking " noise is while accelerating and very pronounced while driving next to say a wall with the passenger window down its the harmonic ballancer. Aparantly only the s has one(so I hear). My 04 mcs does it very loudly. Unfortunately my local dealer says its normal and Mini USA confirmed this. A rep. told me he would try and find me an older one because prior to 04 the used a different design. He never got back to me. Gonna go with Alta 2% pulley and be done with it though.

Does the ticking noise go away when you press in the clutch pedal? If so, it's the flywheel. I have the same problem on mine and need to get the dealer to take care of it...

Ticking like a mentronome, about every second? When car is idlling at warm up and you are standing next to it with a cup of coffee saying to yourself "what is that ticking sound".

I don't know what it is, but have it also.

Same problem. It happened since the first day I had my car and everytime I would bring it to the dealer they would say they couldn't duplicate the sound. So finally one day I grabbed the service advisor and brought him for a ride...tick tick tick...but it would go away as soon as I pushed in the clutch. They ordered parts to fix it, I haven't done it yet, I hope they don't get bent out of shape about my crank pulley. I do have a paperwork trail stating the problem before the crank pulley install though. -- Johan

the crank pulley should not void the warranty of a bad flywheel which is what you have. you should be ok.

Try this - spray a little water on ther serpentine belt when the engine is making the noise. If it quiets down you probably need a new belt and idler pulley. This happened to my "05" at about 6000 to 7000 miles.

If it stays noisy.... without actually hearing the noise it would be hard to tell.

From Greatbear:
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ad.php?t=39884

"There are two different emissions control devices that sometimes come on during warmup. One is the canister purge solenoid that will make a rapid 'tickatickatickaticka' sound at a fixed frequency. The other is the leak detection pump near the fuel tank which makes a slow 'tick-tock' sound for about a minute. It could be most likely the former device. Neither one of these are affected by engine rpm around idle."

flywheel

I just brought in my 05 MCS to the dealer today with the exact problem you described, ticking sound when cold and in idle. They said its the flywheel and are currently replacing it. Hopefully all will go well.....

There are plenty of owners (lots of threads here and on Mini2) who have had the flywheel replaced with NO effect on the tapping noise at idle (in neutral; clutch pedal out). MINI will replace flywheel at owner's request, but the so-called "improved flywheel" (see original service bulletin up to Nov '04 builds) remains a mystery. Personally, I think they just throw in another stock flywheel and hope the tapping goes away!

I have had the tapping at idle since my 05MCS was new (April 05) - if I release the clutch slowly when stopped and in neutral, there is no tapping noise...none. Therefore, I have elected to spare my MINI from "surgery".

A ticking time bomb?!

When my 05 S was in the dealer back in January, they wrote up my same complaint(ticking when cold at idle,no noise when the clutch pedal was pushed in;no noise after warm-up.)They wrote "no concern at this time".Now I am concerned, especially after reading all the posts about replacing the flywheel!Maybe this time they will do something!I have @25K on my car,and the noise has been there for about 10K,but everything works fine.My wife has 15K on her Cabrio, never making any noise!(Knock on wood)So,has anyone had the flywheel come apart or off the crank before the dealer changed it?
