If you replaced the word with any other slur or racial attack we would be up in arms. But it seems that our culture has seen fit to allow RETARDED to mean broken. My amazing son surfs the web and likes My mini (although has been known to call it a Mini-Van) I would feel sad if he saw your post.

Flame me for being too PC, Maybe I am. So be it.

This was not written to hurt or attack. Only to educate.
Sorry, retarded was meant to go along with my thoughts that the car is RETARDING the timing. Sorry again, didn't mean to offend anybody by that.

Geeeezzz!!!!!!! after reading the ENTIRE thread upon returning from dinner i am astonished... i DID NOT mean the term "retarded" towards mentally handicapped people at all! to me the term retarded doesn't even correlate to the mentally challenged, i am very very sorry i offended people. yes, it was meant to be sortof a joke, to get attention so people would look at my question, BUT was not meant to offend anyone! once again, i apologize to NAM, everyone on it, and especially the moderators & admins. i am new to this site and had NO IDEA that certain word would strike up such a big storm... as for the other thread, he pushed a sensitive button, but i'm not going to get into that, its finished, i've already apologized on that thread with the intention to put it behind us. MY APOLOGIES TO EVERYONE.

Jason

I think even a cave man could see that Jason meant no harm in his original query. It's overt sensitivity to words that have more than one meaning that caused the uproar. Read and comprehend the meaning of the words used, and only then go after the intentions behind those words if the intention is mean-spirited, derogatory or otherwise damaging. Witch hunts targeting words (instead of language) do not help your 'cause', nor do they add anything of value to the original discussion.

Greatbear, perhaps you werent aware of the other thread where the phrase "type like a retard" was used and then defended to be OK when confronted (https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ad.php?t=62576 post #26). I do not wish to point fingers as I appreciate the apology that was given but there was more than just this thread at question and I thought that that should be known before you decide that there is "witch hunting" going on and state that cavemen would have realized that no harm was meant. When reading the derogatory use of this term in the other thread, why would one think that any better was meant here?

Meanwhile... back on topic...

I read in another thread where some issues like this were traced to a bad bypass valve by wiretieing it closed.

Power and drivability back, new valve installed, and all was good!

I remember that thread. The phrase was uncalled for then, as it would have been in this case had it been used, or used as such. Agreed, a bit of sensitivity should be used when writing posts that are going to be seen by a very diverse audience, and some people need to be occasionally reminded.

I myself might have to own up to the use of 'witch hunt' in regards to any Wiccans or other practitioners of Magick on the boards.

OKAY. I apologized, but I still see "fingers" my way, and people referring to other threads, dragging things here that ARE NOT RELATED to this thread. The term "retarded" in the title of this thread was because I THOUGHT MY CAR WAS RETARDING the timing. I agree with greatbear 100%. How can you confuse the "R" word in the other thread, which was referring to a certain dialect, to the "R" word here when referring to RETARDING TIMING? You don't think your "witch hunting"? Let’s look at this:

1. So far you have managed to drag ONE problem from ONE thread into another. (even taking the trouble to post a link)
2. Your last post WAS NOT in the intention of answering my LEGITAMET question.
3. You STILL are trying to get as many people as possible to see the other thread, with the intention to justify what you have done here.
4. After I have apologized on BOTH threads (and you obviously read BOTH of them, quote: "as I appreciate the apology that was given") you are still bringing up a now, DEAD topic, so PLEASE, next time you post a reply on my thread, please do so with the intention of answering the ORIGINAL question as I am not going to apologize for this again. When I say "you" or "your" I mean you, MINITOR.
And now back to your regular scheduled thread (again x2):

Sup guys and gals, my MINI is doing something really annoying. Sometimes it seems as if its lacking power, but on other days and even sometimes during a drive, it seems to come back to life and beg to be driven hard. the difference between the two is night and day. (on bad days the power feels like my hyundai elantra, but on good days it feels like the MINI again.. {i say "day" because the performance characteristics that it decides to have usually last all day}) on a bad day it will take an average of 1/8 to 1/4 throttle more to get the same power out of it on a good day. I know its not heat soak because it only changes during times as sitting over night, or sometimes when i'm going down the road about 70mph. the only thing i can think of is the ecu might be retarding the timing for some reason... any idea what it might be from? i've noticed temperature hasn't made a very noticeable difference in the cars performance, except on days when it gets over 65F, normal temps here are between 50-60F for this time of year (i would know, i'm a meteorologist ) I usually run a 50/50 mix of 90 and 95 octane gas since im in the military and stationed in spain... on base gas is 2.65 a gallon for 90, but out in town 95 octane is roughly 4.80 a gallon humidity hasn't changed much lately... Thanks for your help! motor on!

This phrase was posted the same day by this same person, and that is why I thought that its use was derogatory here as well. Honestly I was offended to be compared to a caveman (though I know you know mean no harm and are dont hold it against you, I just reacted). But I realize that others may have not known that the same term was used in a offensive way by the same person, so its fine.

And by the way, I read the apology to Spike for disrupting his thread, but I did not see any apology to those offended by the offensive post.

I do apologize for getting this thread off track as it as all threads contains so much useful information.

From now on all subsequent posts to this thread will be in context to the original question. Please keep the thread on topic. I will not remove the previous sidetrack as it does make people aware of their words and their thinking. Learn from it. Be mindful of not only what you write and how it might be interpreted, but also make sure to note the intent of the words.

We now return you to your thread, already in progress.

Happy Motoring!

When I read an offensive post with a derogatory term used and confront the person on it who then defends that it is not offensive (which it was) and then see that same term used in the title of a thread by the same person I assumed that it was being used derogatorily again. Others felt the same way. My apologies for assuming this, I am sure you can understand why I did.

When someone compares me to a caveman and says that I am witch hunting I do feel that I have the right to explain why I was offended as they did not know about its derogatory use by you in the other thread.

Thats it Im done.

Edit: Sorry GreatBear, posted this before I read your above post.

Thanks matt. I did check that valve this afternoon. at idle it is wide open, but it still seemed to have the right amount of power, if it continues to act up i'll just wire tie it closed.

You people need to get a life. Who cares? You're not much of a person if you're constantly worrying about peoples' choices of words and what they mean to you or others. Who cares? I don't worry about what people that I don't know/who don't know me say about me. PC? I guess we need to rewrite our entire language to eliminate the non-PC words. Don't worry, be happy! I'm not at all worried about what people on NAM may say about me, I've got more important things to worry about in my life. You only live once, don't drag yourself down worrying about one's choice of words or their meaning, and if you have to, say your mind and leave it at that...don't keep rehashing the same thing over and over, it shows how little of a person you are.

SORRY to bring it up again...but I HAD to say my mind this time. There's too much of this bickering on NAM.

Here here.
After reading the other posts mentioned here it appears to me there was plenty of inappropriate posting taking place. I don't see why any of it needed to be taken this far.

he wasnt comparing you to a caveman. That shot was from a Geico ad which depicts a commercial in the ad stating that "Geico is so easy to get, even a caveman can" and then pans out to the people watching the tv. Low and behold, they are cavemen, (cavepeople? cavepersons? whats the PC term for said individuals?) and take offense! A very funny and smart 30 second waste of time!

I cant believe my little 'comment' still has legs around here.

Once and for all, here is what I was referring to. It is funny how life imitates art around these parts.

The good doc raises a good point about the bypass valve, but here's another thing to investigate....

Do you have access to an OBDII scan tool? Plug that sucker up and drive around with it. When/if you experience a lack of power, look to see if the knock sensor is detecting knock (it'll be a yes/no response) and look to see whether the timing is being retarded. My scan tool has configurable displays and it will do this easily. I can even program red/green LED's to tell me whether I'm in a "knock" situation.

This problem is (very likely) going to boil down to one of these scenarios:
1. Knock sensor is bad. Detecting knock that isn't there and retarding the timing.
2. You are getting bad fuel and the knock sensor is doing its job like it should; or
3. You have a sticky bypass valve.

You could possibly have an IAT sensor (intake air temp) sensor badly out of calibration that makes the ECU think the intake air is way too hot and not allowing full boost. There are other obscure possibilities, but the numbered ones above are the best bet.

Best of luck and let us know what it is.

Rawhyde
