New gasket done. Now new head :-(

Heres my story:

Back in Dec of 2005 I took my car to my dealer complaining of a SES light and that the car was running very rough. I was told the head gasket was bad and that it needed to be replaced. That there was coolant in my oil. So the gasket was replaced and I went about my mary way.

Ever since then if I went to check my dipstick I found what looked like coolant on the tip.

Well today I called my dealer to see if they could look at the stick. To see if it was coolant, condensation or what. Well they did some test which tells them if there is coolant in the oil. The test showed some but not alot. So since I already had a gasket replaced they now say my car will get a new cylinder head or they will hone(ground) I don't know the word the head so that it fits on the block correctly.

Well after hearing this I am just totally out of it..I just wanted to have the oil flushed and they want to swap the head out... But they know best right

They are booked till next Tuesday and have no loaners till then either. Now I have to take it easy on the car and wait till then.

I am not going to name any name or names of dealers. I am just sharing my story to see if anyone else has seen such an occurance.

It's generally good practice to resurface the cylinder head or heads whenever they are removed from the block. It sounds like this was not done when your head gasket was changed. Did they do a pressure test of the cooling system to see if it would hold? The coolant in your oil could just be residual from the head gasket leak depending on the amount. You are more lucky than some people i've read about, with the mods you have and the dealer will still warranty service.

They deffenately should have checked the plane of the head when they took it off. Just because of the fact that the gasket let go, the head could be slightly warped?

Actually, it was checked with a plane to make sure it was level. I was concerned about that when the work was done, so I'm inclined to believe that the head has a hairline crack that developed when the gasket blew to begin with. If the head was warped, the coolant & oil would have been mixing at a very rapid rate, enough to where it would have been noticed loooong ago.

I'm not suprised about the head, though. Given the condition of the gasket when it came out, I was suprised when the engine/head passed a pressure test. I figured for sure the head would have suffered some damage, but at the time everything looked copasetic. I used to see this a lot with Porsche 944 turbo motors-being overboosted would actually cause the cylinder walls to rock side-to-side causing the headgasket to blow & sometimes damage the head as well. Not common but definately not unheard of.

These Pentagon motors are pretty tough little beasts, though; I'll be sorry to see them go with the '07 . Hopefully the new motors will be as durable-time will tell on that one.

Good luck on the head, just remember if & when somebody starts complaining about the catch-can & other mods, you already know what to do . Cheers!

Well yesterday when I took it by the dealer they just did some test on the oil to see for coolant. When they did the gasket I was told they checked to see if the head and block were within specs. They were so they went ahead and just did the gasket. It all just kind of makes me ponder what to do. Warranty or no warranty. If I was going down the road and this car died on me what would I do.

If there is coolant in the oil - FLUSH! It doesn't belong there!

Had a similar issue with an older VW and all I can say is that if the work isn't done right then you will end up killing the engine later. Coolant is corrosive and can cause serious issues in the engine.
