i have found that sixth gear whines a bit too much doing 75. always feel like shifting just one more time. any chance of getting a higher gear here? or adding one? i figure there might be a ratio thing that might be adjusted. this would help GPM too.

any thoughts?

I was mentioning this to someone else the other day! 6th is actually LESS than 1:1 !
... whereas the Cooper 5th is 1.08:1 ... seems like the aftermarket would jump on this, except that the expense of getting in there to change the cluster would be more than the price of a whole 'box ...

It could get rapidly expensive. I'm wondering about your problem though, I've had the MCS at 105 and it was sitting at about 4500 rpm and sounded fine. Are you just wanting a different noise or better rpm's or what? Just wondering.

... now that I think about it, BMW/MINI probably WANT you to keep the rev's up - just to get the most out of the Kompressor. So if you put a pulley kit on and the rev's to the blower are even higher, an overdriven 6th would compliment that well ...

to give a comparison: My '93 BMW 325i has a 1:1 5th, with a 2.93:1 rear end.
(using a gearspeed table I have):
40mph, 3er=1750rpm, MCS=1655rpm
80mph, 3er=3500rpm, MCS=3310rpm
105mph, 3er=4594rpm, MCS=4345rpm
135mph, 3er=5906rpm, MCS=5586rpm

So you see, the 3-series has a bit of a shorter top gear ratio to the MCS, but only by a little. Generally, this is BMW tuning, and I love it!

Cheers,
Ryan

True, but the 3-series has the inherently smooth I6, while the MINI has an I4. It's fairly smooth, but a little roughness is the nature of the beast...

I really thought this thread might be about something else. 1100 posts does seem about right though.

that's pretty cool stuff Dave, props to you!

...back to our regularly scheduled thread...

Is the tall 6th gear question more of a perception of higher rpm, due to a slight thrashiness of the MINI Pentastar 4-banger?

What do you mean by it whines too much? It's a small engine, they are made for higher revs then your standard big block chevy...
