Thank you! While doing a visual is a good thing, it's nice to know the oil can be changed with the plate on.

Were you talking to me? I have a skidplate

10MM 1.5 pitch as I remember. BTW - when installing the Moss skid plate, I would NOT recommend using Locktite on the threads as in the supplied instructions but lock washers instead. In fact if you live in a "salty" environment, you may want to use anti-seaze on the threads with the lock washers as well, otherwise you may find yoursekf having to grind the bolt heads off to remove the skid plate.

In an indirect fashion. You mentioned that your skid plate had helped you survive encounters with road debris and I picked that comment to leverage with my post.

First thing I put on my new MCS a year ago: the Moss aluminum plate. Cheap insurance, protects the PS fan too. I couldn't see any reason for the extra weight of the steel versions.

Just got done doing my first oil change & installing my Moss aluminum skid plate. Pretty easy install & it looks like it'll do a fine job of protecting the underbelly of my MINI.

Don't know if this is the right thread (or OT: Movie Oneliners??) but "ain't never seen a skull come apart like that before) rings true from Platoon or Casulties of War type Vietnam flicks as well as what a Moss steel skidplate will do to a recalcitrant 'possum caught unaware at 3:00 in de a'yem.

If you drive your MINI constantly (and who among us doesn't?) you'll eventually have need for one of these to protect your engine's vulnerable underside. Mine's come in handy on the Interstate where it is oftentimes impossible to change lanes when debris (flotsom and jetsom to the nautical set) magically appears in your path. Get the heavy duty, hard core version and sleep easy.

I would be down for a aluminum one . I will sell my stainless and go for a little lighter one if this comes about.

wow, judging from those pics, looks like I should invest in one. I had a rear diff protector on my subaru, and yeah, it took lots of abuse. great thread idea

I wished I read this thread alot sooner. On a pie-tin rally this weekend my chin spoiler topped a baseball-sized rock causing it to 'jump' up and crack my oilpan. Insurance is covering it minus my regular deductible. I was following another car and did not have the time/space to react.

i deffinately want to get a skid plate but i can't figure out if the extra weight of the steel vs the Al one has that much of an extra benifit

anyone happen to know the thickness of either/both of these plates for comparision purposes?

I can't tell you anything about the steel one. I do have the aluminum one & to me it seems darned sturdy. If you are going to run rallies then get the steel one. For normal use the aluminum will be fine.

yeah i dont think i will be doing any rallying with my current ground clearance (one of the reason i want to get said item)

do you remember before you put it on your car wether or not it could support itself or how much it sagged at the opposite end if you held it at just one side? if that makes sense

It didn't sag. It is a substantial piece of aluminum. Keep in mind I'm an old fart with a old farts memory.

A cheese grater eh? Could be Vandals from Wisconsin.

could be, they are a rival Big Ten school ( i go to U of M Ann Arbor)

it might also be due to the extreme drop off between the road and pull off areas on the dragon
and my appetite for autoX cones
