Oil breather? Line from valves to intake??

I've seen this discussed in relation to a DIY HAI, but couldn't find the thread. Anway, there's a hose that runs from the right side of the valve cover area into the intake hose. What the heck is it?:impatient

I think the thread in question had the line taken off, and replaced with an oil breather/filter. Can this harm anything?? Why's it even attached to the intake at all? Is it just an emissions issue? I ask cuz I'm thinking of a DIY CAI, and don't want to have to bother with this line.

Thanks for any info!

That hose is the breather inlet for the crankcase. Many have simply attached a small breather filter to this with success. The only issue that might crop up is occasionally having an oily smell coming from the engine during low vacuum/boost conditions because the PCV system is not functioning under these operating conditions and any blow-by that might be hapening reverses and comes out via the beather inlet. For most people, this is not an issue. Attaching a filter prevents debris from entering the crankcase during normal operation.

Depending on emissions laws and testing in your area, disconnecting the breather and/or fitting it with an external breather might fail a visual inspection. If you are using a filter with an extended neck, in some cases you can fit a hose nipple there to accomodate the breather hose.

Cool! Thanks very much for the info. I'm gonna try it out. I've learned more on NAM in the past year or so than I can mention.
