Clack when accel. and Double clack when decel.

Heres a brain teaser for you guys.

My 05 MC makes a clack noise when starting out (seperate from the ABS/Locking, since this happens at 0-5, and the other two happen at 11mph). Clack = two billiard ***** hitting.

When decellerating, sometimes, it makes a double clack.

Its at the service dept now, for maintenance and looking into this, but I wanted to know what you guys thought the problem might be?

Check out the "what makes a MINI click" thread, may be the same issue.

Also, I had my tool kit stowed next to the battery, it make a thunk sound as it moved around back there. I now store it on a shelf in the garage, not going to be much help with out a jack and spare anyway.

Do you have an aftermarket front sway bar or end links?

Car is stock except for MTH, aero grill, and amp/sub. It isnt the sub box moving since it would make an entirely different noise (more of a dull thud than a clack.)

Also, on the accel clack, the car semi-stumbles too.

Hmmm, they're saying that the clack noise is normal... a charactaristic of the Getrag... and they found that the Clutch might be glazed over cause its making a sound like a whale call (?)... Any idea what they mean by that. They didnt mention how much its going to cost but I'm gonna call tomorrow to make sure I dont get slammed with a $1k+ bill on my first dealer service at 9k.

AHH!

This is your problem: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ad.php?t=44291

It happend to me a few weeks ago. You're welcome to read the entire thread, but the first post will give you the fix. I took my MINI to the dealer; the service guy just did steps 8 and 9:
8) Re-torque nut to 134 ft-lbs.
9) Tap lip of the axle-nut back into the indentation to lock it in place. Again...use a brass drift punch to make sure you don't damage

Only once ever, or only once per start, speed up, or slow down?

Only from a dead stop accel, it would make the noise once, then nothing. The double-clack noise was when decellerating to a stop (or less than 5mph), and comes form the back (i think its the rear brakes or something... its odd to say the least).

Mine had the "Whale Call" Good way of explaining the noise

Only ever did it from cold, and when you pulled away in first gear....like a woooooo noise !

And that was on a 02 plate Cooper S with 18,000 miles, clutch replaced and noise went away. They did do the release bearing first but noise were still there

My noise happend only once, too. During accelerating of the wheel, i.e. starting, slowing quickly.
Two pool ***** hitting is the best way to describe the noise I heard. Have someone stand outside the car, is it coming from the wheel area?

I'll have to check that. It feels like its coming from under the driver floor board though, and you can feel it as well as hear it.

I have the Whale call too. But i have a few mods like pulley, intake, exhaust, software. Do you think they would deny my clutch replacement because of them? Please dont give me any garbage about how i should not have modded. Car has 35500. Should i try to do it before the 36000 miles?

If you wait until after 36000, you're out of luck. Get it there ASAP, as the clutch is a wear and tear item (unless you have a faulty part ruin it.. flywheel/TO Bearing). Its my understanding you're most likely to get it covered free between 30k-36k since its usually considered abuse pre-30k.

I dont see how they could deny your clutch claim on account of other mods, unless they attribute the extra stress on the clutch due to the extra power you're putting down due to said mods. Take it in. The worst they can do is tell you no, and then ask for their manager...

My noise is also coming from under the floor-board. My guess at this point is the steering rack. I had dealer tighten the rack at first service & it seemed OK for about 200 miles then came back.

RedBaronF2001 and I have both isolated a very similar-sounding issue to being the brake pads. When the car is at rest, the pads are in contact with the rotors. If they're hot, they tend to very slightly fuse to the rotor. When you move, they either shift just a tiny bit or break their spot-weld. It does sound just like two pool ***** clacking. I would also expect this sound on a car with caliper stiffeners.
