Home made ramps?

I want to build a set of drive on ramps so I can service and mod from the bottom up. I was thinking of using Rhino ramps for the incline, but seek advice on how to support the horizontal surfaces. Anybody built a set of these?

Not mine, but I was going to make a set like this. Has a removable middle section and can be built to many different sizes.

Hard to beat $20 for a set of ramps.

Good luck.

Cool looking ramps 2Miniac. Looks easy to build. If it can keep a vette from crashing down on you, it will be guaranteed safe for an MC. Looking it over, I am having visions of making a bar that spans either the 2 front or rear jacking pads so the 2 wheels can come off he ramp and jack stands inserted undernearth the chassis. Mmmmm . . . could work

I made a set many years ago out of twelve inch wide by one inch thick wood. The sketch below is what they looked like. Kind of heavy (a good thing) and plenty sturdy. Considering the cost and time to build these, it would be easier to buy a set of ramps from Pep Boys, although with the home made design, once the car is up there, you could remove the ramp section and free up that area behing the wheel.

ramp plans

ramps are a fairly common learner's project for welding 101 classes. there are plans available both on line and probably at your library.

however the cost in materials will exceed the cost of rhino's easily....that assumes you have access to a welder and someone who knows how to do it.

you might see if a local school has a vo-tech welding class. you might swing a deal where you provide the materials and they weld 'em up for you...sometimes they are looking for projects.

With a decent MIG unit and about a hundred feet of 1 inch angle iron ... hmmm

Thanks everyone. The problem with Rhino's is that they hold one end of the car off the ground and leave the other on the floor. The car sits at an incline. I want to get both ends up. What I have in mind looks more like 2miniacs posted pix. I just figured that rather than toss out the Rhino's I own, I could use them for the inclined part of the ramp to drive up onto the horizontal section.

If you're going to go with a lift then you're better off with one like in my gallery....... Much more useful.

The Kwiklift is kinda neat... and I do like the portable aspect of it... but it's a bit expensive when a more useful two-post lift can be had for a few hundred more.

I do like the wood ramps in the Vette picture.

I know someone already mentioned this before, but why not use 2 sets of Rhino's? Put one set under the front and one set under the rear and just drive up. Should raise the front and rear at the same time. I've done this with other cars (but never tried it on my Mini).

Yup. The model for $999 is what I had in mind in terms of function. I think it can be built from 2x lumber for much much less. I like the idea posted earlier in this thread (with pix) of the wood ramp and "lift" with removable center sections so you can get in and out on a creeper.
