Roof creases
Roof creases
Hi,
I own a 2002 Cooper S with a sunroof, I first noticed 2 creases on the driver side just above the b-piller, I dismissed it thinking someone hit the roof. Later I noticed rippling and a sharp outward dent on the passanger side also above the b-piller. Both very noticable when looking down the roof line. I brought it to my friendly neighbourhood Dealer "Ottawa Mini East" where the service manager looked at the car confirmed the creases and took some photos. It was also in for 14 warranty items! I was told that BMW canada would have to get involved so I said fine let's just make sure that this get taken care of properly and that I'm not in a hurry. A week goes by and nothing, I contact the dealer where by they inform me that a BMW rep wants to see it. Long story short, no rep ever looked at it and they are denying responsibility. I complain to BMW customer service they say that they will look into it. A week later again I call, they say that a rep was supposed to call me to look at it I tell them that no one contacted me. Another week and I get a call that they were denying warranty. They were basing there decision on the opinion of a service manager that as far as I know has no specific expertise to make that call, as far as I know he was an advisor before that. I'm considering taking BMW to arbitration over this as I now own a car that has structural flaws and has decreased in value considerably. Nobody from BMW ever looked at the car, this tells me that they know about the problem and are trying to sweep me under the rug. Has anyone else had creases appear near the b-piller, I'de love to know. Sorry for the long read,
Thanks in advance, Froger
Oh ya I asked to speek to the manager at customer service, the responce I got from the attendant was "It won't do you any good but I'll give you his # anyway" Nice!

Frogger: It's hard for us to understand what the problem is. Are you saying that the metal roof has creases in it? When I read your comment the first time, I thought you were referring to a convertible, but then you mentioned a sun roof.
My advice would be to send a letter to both BMW and the dealer making a formal claim under the warranty, and confirming your efforts to get the problem addressed. Give them 20 days to respond. If they don't, you've documented the claim and will have to proceed with your remedies in Canada (I don't know what that would be as I'm from the US). At least here, sending a letter often gets your case to a higher level and may prompt a response. If not, you have better documentation for a legal case.

I have the exact same creases (both sides - same spot) on my '04 MCS (white roof with sunroof). I noticed them about 3 months after I got mine. I'm looking into paintless dent repair on them, but don't know if they will be able to poke around much up there with the side air bag curtains.
If it's really from metal expanding and nowhere to go creating those ripples
and high spots, PDR will not be able to fix it completely. i think you need
a new roof.

The creases are not that easy to see. I only noticed it when I was measuring the roof for an aftermarket rack. I can live with it versus a new roof or entering some long drawn out battle with MINI over it.
