MCS standard. I drove about a hundred miles yesterday and no problems.

Replacing the tensioner and belt seems to have fixed it for now. I'll be more confident after I put a few thousand miles on it.

All of those "not currently squeaking due to recent repair" vehicle owners, PLEASE keep us posted as you drive a bit more! I would definitely like to know what constitutes a cure! I am still waiting. My car (6 speed standard) goes back to the shop Wednesday. Hopefully the inspector will pop in sometime in the near future and figure out what is wrong my car! I will let you all know what the repair plan is just as soon as I hear something.

It's been several weeks and almost a thousand miles later since they put on the JCW belt.. no more squealling. Seems to be pretty smooth. I know they did the same thing to another MINI with the same issues and apparently it is still OK to.

I'll ask for a belt too!

Kevin,

I'll make sure I get the belt replaced when I take the car in on the 5th.
It appears that calling the Service Manager and telling them that you won't answer with "Fives" on the satisfaction survey gets you some attention.

A couple questions if you don't mind:

Who did you talk to at Classic? I worked with Zach the first time and
have talked to Tom Reichert about coming in this next time.

Did you talk to any technicians?

Did you have to prove the squeel? It will be only about 75 degrees when I take it to them Friday morning and it might not be making the noise.

Regards, Mike

BTW, I picked my car up (Julie) the same day as you.

I dealt with Tom and Zach and they are both familiar with my problem. Zach was very helpful and brought me into the shop to talk with the techs.

I did speak to a couple of techs, but the one that helped me out and solved the problem had what sounded like an Eastern European accent. Very nice guy, unfortunately I forgot his name.

As for proving the squeal, my car wasn't squealing when they looked at it. So there was some debate as to what to do, but the tech changed the belt out just to be sure. I put another 90 miles on yesterday and still no squeal. I'm fairly confident it is fixed. To add to that, Zach had heard the squeal previously when I brought it in, so he backed me up on it.

I'll give the service department a call today and let them know that changing the belt and tensioner seems to have taken care of the problem. That way it stays in the back of thier heads for when you come in.

Which car was yours? I assume it was in the showroom that day. I'll keep an eye out for you at the picnic if you're attending.

I just spoke with Tom in service and let him know that the tensioner and belt replacement seems to have worked.

Thanks for setting me up !

Thanks Kev!n,

You've set things up so I shouldn't have to argue for both a belt and a tensioner replacement!

My car was the EB/W with 17" s-lites. I picked it up at about 3:00.

Just clicked past 600 miles on a drive during lunch. Finally it is not raining. STILL NO SQUAL. They replaced the belt tensioner, but siad they did not replace the belt. I couldn't believe that as it is only $20. I did notice that the turn signal lens it cracked so it goes back for that next week. Also they have screwed up the doors by buffing them for some readson.

Mine went back into the shop today...don't know yet what they plan to do. I will keep everyone posted with the details regarding the repair and the results thereof.

Quick Update....

We've had two solid days of 90 degree and higher temps and the car has not chirped/squealed/whined or squeaked. I'm satisfied that it is fixed.

Still waiting

After 4 weeks and I am still waiting for a new supercharger (not the belt or belt tensioner), its on backorder and is coming from the UK, by boat?
By now I have over 700 miles and still squeeling when its warm and only when I hit the gas. The dealer has others with the same problem so I guess it is a June/July new car issue.

Hi Fellow Present or Previous Squealers,

The mechanics replaced my belt and adjusted the alternator. 100 miles so far with no squeal. I will keep you all posted.

do i have this problem?

hi everyone -

sorry you've all been having problems. i too have a squeal/dentist drill sound in my 2005 mcsa when i step on the gas after the car has been warmed up. my tech thought it was the jcw air box and we replaced it but the noise persists.

can y'all tell me if it's LOUD or more of a subtle, only audible when the radio's off type of thing? mine's the latter and i just want to try and figure out if my tech and i are looking in the wrong place for this mystery squealing. it also only happens when the car is warmed up and running in gear - and especailly at speed on the hiway! if everyone else's noise is really loud then perhaps i have a different problem...

muchos gracias - drew

With the windows up and the radio on, hard to hear. Windows down, radio off, sounds like hell. Worst when accelerating briskly away from a stop, just noticeable at highway speeds over the tire and wind noise with the radio off. As the day and car get warmer, the noise is there more often. Took it to the dealer to have them take a look, but they couldn't reproduce it. They only had it a few minutes so I know they couldn't have changed anything but it's history now for me. Went away on it's own after about 2000 miles. I'm now at 3500 miles and modding away. It's not squealing with a 15% pulley and the original belt.

I'm leaning towards my dealer tech being right and that the wax stuff they coat the cars in for shipment is getting on the belt.

Popular Problem

Wife's new Cooper S has the same problem. Picked up last Saturday evening. Put 5 miles on it before starting to hear the the sound of a bearing starting to go or a loose belt. Having had to replace a belt tensioner on another car before for a similar problem, I felt that this was the issue.

Emailed dealership immediately when I had heard this and informed them that it was getting progressively worse in sound...louder. Took the car into the dealership Monday morning. They returned it on Wednesday afternoon after having to order the parts from back east somewhere.. The issue is apparently fixed.

When expressing the frustration with a brand new car having this kind of problem, the typical comments were made that things happen and that this is an unusal problem.

Sounds like it is a larger problem than what Cooper Corparate may believe.

Fixed??

I clicked by 1100 miles last week no problems with sqeal since belt tensioner was replaced @ 266 miles. Just FYI, I mine squealed like a stuck pig whenever it went over about 2500 RPMs. If you open the hood with the engine running and have someone rev the engine over 2500 RPM you will hear it right at the belt area and it will be loud.

So far so good (round 2)

Classic replaced the tensioner Friday morning as promised. I talked to both Zach and Tom, but both were reluctant to replace the belt too. Lots of HWY and city miles this weekend and no chirpping. This week will be hot again, so I'll see.

My side story: I asked Zach to have the "convienence opening" function programmed since they missed it when I got the car. He wanted $45 to do it. As soon as the Mini showroom opened (across the street) I had Julie check. It turns out the sheet she originally sent me lists that function as enabled by default. The factory recently changed the default to disabled. Julie convinced them to re-program for me at no cost!

Squeeling Too

Hi all,

First post. Glad to finally be here. Picked up my MCSa on 7/15/05, started squeeling at 25 miles. Dealer here in Florida is very busy and behind. After two weeks, dropped off the car for the problem. They had to order the parts, left the car with them to reserve my slot and not to wait again. Tomorrow will be a week and they think they will have all the parts and get me back on the road again. They said they were changing a crankshaft pulley, but today were waiting on a tensioner spring. Will post the complete list and the results when I get Gadget back.

Seems to me that this is a problem that should be resolved quickly for others that are purchasing MC's. When I picked up my wife's car, the service advisor informed me that this has been a known problem. They also replaced the belt on the car.

Gadget, I would make it a point of calling your Mini Dealer and get them to get those parts as soon as possible. You paid good money for the car and they should be responding quicker to the problem As I stated before, took it in a a Monday, was returned on the next Wednesday afternoon. They had to have the parts shipped in from back east.

Picked up my S late yesterday

they replaced the tensioner and the belt - of course I did talk with the technician when I took it in and let him know all of the discussion on this board. He agreed with the diagnosis and hopefully no more squeel!

As I had mentioned early on in the thread... I was quite disappointed that I had just made a hefty down payment and would soon be getting a 1st car payment only to be driving a MCa when I bought a MCSC. I aksed fo a nicer loaner car and got a 2006 BMW 530i. The guys @ Flow Mini are quite nice guys and gals.

Picked up Gadget today

Picked up Gadget today after the squeel repair. They changed an Alternator Drive Belt Tensioner, Vibration Dampener, and Fan Belt according to the work order. In addition, the crankshaft pulley had peeling paint which Mini Europe also recommended replacing. There were a number of emails between Florida and Europe and the crankshaft pulley had to come from Germany. They offered me a loaner several times, but it didn't seem necessary since we now own three cars, but I might take it if there is a next time and the repair takes time. Anyway, NO SQUEEL SO FAR. Now I need to get it broken in so the real fun can begin.

AZptcruiser,
I take it you own a PT Cruiser. My wife drives a 2002 Deep Cranberry Limited. Yes , I agree it would have been nice to get the car back quicker, but seems that they weren't receiving parts orders when expected (primarily from Germany). Just my luck. LOL

I will let everyone know if the squeel comes back. Thanks for all the good posts. Made me feel better when the paper work showed belts and tensioners changed after reading about yours. Hope everyone gets theirs resolved soon.

Cheers and Happy Motoring
