Popped a CV

Son of a #@*?!

I was following some friends tonight and they decided a u turn at the end of a road would be a good idea. I followed and when i hit about 180 degrees i hear a pop and the car goes into "Roll Mode" if youve ever broken a tranny, blow a clutch, or messed up a driveshaft, you know what "Roll Mode" is.

Well, i think I took the turn a bit too sharp and something didnt like the angle it was at and i broke the end of the CV, on the spindle end on the driver side. I think i just broke a pin or something, the axel didnt smack around, its just spinning in the boot.

Has anyone seen this before? Are mini axles a bit weak? Ive taken a brisk drive before in the Mini, but i havent ever broken anything.

now i'm just talking to hear my self.....talk. ok i'll stop....

Do you think something like they CV on the axle, or in the worst case, the whole axle, would be a warantee fix? Or are they gonna try and screw me over and try to say it was abuse?

I beat my old dodge spirit till the tranny let go and i NEVER did anything to an axle or a CV ever! and with the spirit, i did neutral slams till the tranny was in 6 pieces! hehe old beater cars....gotta love em...lol

This is honestly - in 3 years - the first I've heard of this happening. I would think it would be worth your while having the dealership take a look at it. I know LOTS of us have driven our MINIs hard - love those twisties and they are simply amazing.....please let us know the outsome...

Man. Those words brought back memories of my experience with "roll mode". It happened to me with my old Porsche. Not fun.
Definitely have the dealer look at it. I can't imagine how this could not be a warranty fix.

ok, i went to the dealer and performed a little exploratory surgery on my car in the parking lot.

ok, CV for sure. the axle in in the boot and i can move it at least 1 inch up and down, but i cant pull it out of the boot. hopefully then, it was just a u joint in the end of the axle and it will be a quick fix, since i think some of the u jount is still on the axle cause i couldnt pull it out of the boot.

hopefully if i can get it into service early tomarrow, i can get it back tomarrow. if not, I GET A RENTAL CAR!!!!! woo hoo.....well not really cause it prolly gonna be a KIA or some other crap like that....maybey i will get a bimmer....ooh a 18 year old with a bimmer.....too many things would happen if they gave me the keys to a bimmer hehehe

Well, be glad at least you have a set of wheels to tool around while your MINI is in for repairs. Something better than nothing.

Do ya think, that some of this type of reaction and behavior hasn't been taken into account for decisions made by car rental company's in setting the age for renting a car?
Ya know what, just maybe you broke your MINI.

At about what speed did you start this maneuver, was the handbrake involved and where you on the gas?
I feel kind of sorry for your Mom and her car but then she could have said no, that's the kind of sorry part.

Paying your dues can be tuff but if you live long enough it's called experience.

well, ive pretty much ruled out me breaking the car since i havent beaten on it since i got the car.

Started the manuver from a stop. no handbrake, didnt exceede 10 miles per hour in the turn. i was about 1/4 to 1/2 throttle.

I told my mom she could have her car, just park the mini and i'll ride the bus, she said no, so its not like i'm forcing it on her. i dont like driving her car, but is transportation for now

...car should be back soon...

i gotta go stop at classic now to see what they are doing, they havent gotten to it yet....i'm assiming some richy rich BMW owner wanted his car in first. i should have been first, i was first on the work list for the day, so thats what ive got to work with right now.... i'll let you know what happens when i get back from classic...

well, talked to BMW. they said they dont stock the axle becuase they never have had one break before. i should have the car back friday or monday, not too bad, at least i have a date now.

i talked to the tech that inspected the car and he said that the tranny should go before one of the axles should ever come near letting go. hes said he had NEVER seen a CV go on any new car thats been thru there before. he also said that the power that the mini puts out come no where near enuff to break one, nomatter how much you could beat on it. he said most likely a factory dud, just a one in a million kinda thing. and they said 100% covered under the waranty, due to it being most likely a factory defect.

that puts me at ease now, at least i know for sure what the problem is and i know it wil be fixed. ok, i'm happy agian lol

Niiiice post

Sure... year in and out there are lots of accidents involving young inexperienced folks. That's why insurance costs are high for this same cohort. The young pay plenty of "dues".

Insurance is a business like any other, and more profitable than most.

Frankly, I'm impressed with our young freind. Especially considering your baiting. The non-reaction smacks of a tolerance one might attribute to a more wisened individual. Experience...? Hmmmm

well, i finally got my mom to let me take the MCC loaner down the street today....

CVT is strange feeling, but i kinda liked it. and she likes the car too. i think i might be able to get her to go look at convertables here soon...

i think i like convertables now, i just dont like the roofline with the top up. i might consider trading mine in for an 07 if i like the way they turn out and i might spring for the MCSC this time..... wei'll see...
