Oil Filter Wrench

Does anyone know if there is a specific wrench available to remove the oil filter housing? Or barring that, what size wrench do you need to remove it?
Thanks.

The hex on the top changed size around 2003 models. My 2002 has (if I remember right) a 38mm hex, which is really tough to find!

You need a 36mm socket. I picked one up at Home Depot 2 weeks ago on sale for about 2 dollars. (half inch drive).

Socket

It is a 36mm socket. Some have had luck with a standard socket but there isn't much room in there. I have a specialty Oil Filter socket, it is a shallow socket packaged by AST. The part number on the package is H 2169-36. I don't have the web site handy but the part number might help. I think it was tool source dot come or something like that.
Good luck.

Part number stamped on the tool is Hazet 2169-36.

I think it was about 30 to 35 dollars.

Thanks tfleury9,

Found the company and ordered one. A little bit expensive but will come in handy.

Just think how easy it would have been for them to cast a 1/2" square drive right in the housing. Guess they don't want to encourage D-I-Yers.

Absolutely right about limited clearance, I should have mentioned I cut all but a half inch of the depth off the socket. It still only cost $2.00 on sale and the use of a power hack saw.

Most standard depth 36mm sockets should work without spending the extra money on a specialty tool. My ratchet is a flex-head, but I don't think I bend it for access.

Just pick up a socket from JC Whitney. That same 36mm size is used on the old air cooled Beetles and is common. Socket quality doesn't matter as you will be applying very little torque. I use the standard socket purchased at the above location along with a standard 1/2" drive ratchet (non-flex). No problems at all.

I just changed my oil for the first time tonight. I also ordered a 36mm socket.

When I was digging in there I noticed the oil filter canister is dimpled just like a typical spin on oil filter. I placed my spin on filter wrench from my VW onto the Mini's canister and it fit! I was able to turn the house with it too!

Glad I waited for that Craftsman socket to show up in the mail . Granted you won't be able to torque the housing to spec with the filter wrench, but d@mn, I can't be the first one to see this!
