Oil Temp Gauge Not Working

I have the MC40 edition and my oil temperature gauge has quit showing any reading for the last month or so. It was reading 100C (after warm up) during last autumn and I put it down to the cold weather but it doesn't even get off the stop. Recently it did briefly jump up to 80C and then went back to the stop. Maybe a loose connection at the sensor? Anyone know where to look as I'm not due for a service anytime soon and don't want to put it in to the dealer just for this.

Look under your engine and see if the wire came unplugged from the oil drain sensor.

The sensor is located in the oil pan drain plug. Check the connection.

Thanks I will check it out this weekend. You know what - I seem to remember that this problem started just after I had a 5,000 mile oil change. Could the mechanic have dislodged the wire when he removed the drain plug or not put it back on correctly?

My 2003 S had an intermittent problem with the optional oil temp gauge, sometimes the needle would peg all the way to the right, past the max 150 Centigrade point. Dealer replaced the sending sensor (in the oil drain plug). But that didn't help. So I removed the old oil temp gauge and replaced with a new one from Summit Racing - part number VDO-310012. The new one is Fahrenheit instead of Centigrade, which is better for me and seems to be working correctly now. The new one had a white back light - so I used the light from the old unit so that it matched the rest of the gauges.

Yep this is the sensor which is now nla below. We have been working with VDO and should have some gauges in the future, they will not have the MINI logo but have some options. https://www.ecstuning.com/b-vdo-parts/v-mini/
