Engine code scan & reset
Engine code scan & reset
This may be old news. The May issue of Bimmer magazine came today and I noticed an ad by Peake Research. In addition to their BMW scanners they now have one for the MINI.
R5 EMX Engine Scan and Reset for MINI
R5/EMX - Scans Engine Codes, resets Check-Engine (Service Eng Soon) light, resets Oilservice / Inspection and Maintenance mileage. Includes code definition book and case. New Mini Only.
This unit lists for $129.99.
I have used a borrowed Peake scan & reset unit on my BMW, and it’s a very handy tool - especially if you can borrow it instead of buying. Different units are required for the MINI and the BMW.

Maybe there are different tools from Peake, but Actron has one that will work on any OBD-II compliant system. I bought one at Autozone around Christmas and it reads (and clears codes on) my MINI, our 3 Jeeps, our son's 2004 Jetta andour 1998 Honda Civic. I imagine it would work on a BMW as well but I don't have one to try.
For a $79 investment, I'm very pleased.
It won't reset the oil service indicator though, but there's a procedure to do that without the scan tool so I'm not too worried about it.

scan tools
MINI has THREE networks.
The OBD II tools will access the codes on the required OBDII network. The other two networks are available on the connector, but on different pins and with a different tool.
Having said that, I plan to look at the Autozone generic OBD II tool for under $100, the next time I am in there as I also have several OBD II cars, and having a tool that can read those codes could be quite useful!
Thanks
John

Nope. That's on a separate network from the OBDII. That will require a dealer visit at this point.
