Way back in the mid to late sixties when all cars were NA some came with an economy meter in the dash which was actually a vacuum gauge.
The face of the gauge was labeled to indicate a scale of economy.
By providing the driver the visual feed back for maintaining a high vacuume in the intake manifold which is directly related to the throttle position and your right foot.

Or shift lights triggered by intake manifold vacuum.
