I was driving along peacefully, ripping my R53 down some backroads when all the sudden she starts sounding like a box of legos in a washing machine. (It also threw a battery light and started pouring smoke out from the hood when I started it up the next day) I was able to limp it home without issue after pulling over and assessing the situation, and I thought that this issue was the alternator going out. I have seen videos of Minis making a very similar noise when their alternator goes out but after replacing the alternator the issue persists. Now I’m thinking a/c compressor? Because the knocking seems to get louder when I turn on the climate control. Does anyone have any idea what this could be?
