Outside Temp display blinking!!!

Hi guys,

Just to find out from any of you guys experience the outside temperature display in the Rev gauge goes blinking for a few seconds and then stop.I didn't use my Mini Cooper S for almost 3 weeks and when I start it today,I found the display of the outside temperature shows -40 degree celcius and blinking for a few seconds before it stop.

Is there anything wrong with the on board computer or it's normal for a car which hasn't been use for sometime? The current outside temperature supposed to be 32 degree celcius as I'm in Malaysia.

Kindly share your opinion should there be any way or method to get the problem solve.

Thankyou.

Peter.

I know the thing blinks for a few seconds and does a beep for a black ice warning.... im guessing this is what is happening to you. If you take it around the block a couple times the sensor might give you a bit better of a reading.

Hi,

I hope it does not has anything to do with reprogramming the on board computer by BMW.

Anyone else experience this problem before?

Thankyou.

Peter.

I always get an audible "ding" and flashing at 37 degrees F. Freaked me out until I found out what it was. Any chance your thermometer accidently changed to Fahrenheit?

Peter, this is not a problem. The temp display is supposed to blink this way upon startup if the temp is at or near freezing (I forget the exact parameters) as a warning for possible ice. Just think of it as your MINI confirming what you already know - it's cold outside!

temp display

yup, if it is 3 degrees Celsius or below, it gives a little bing and flashes. i think it is the MCS's way of pleading with me not to drive it in this yucky canadian weather

As for why it is telling you it's -40 when you're in Malaysia... can't help you there...

Uh, he's talking 32 CELCIUS. That's around 90 F. Pretty far from freezing is my guess. I suggest you contact your dealer to see what is going on. Did the temperature gauge revert to the real temperature eventually?

Temp Sensor Wries (My guess)

I had a similar thing on my old 325iX. The wires to the temp sensor had become disconnected, and it defaulted to the lowest temp reading for the display. ( I think that car was -90 if I recall)

I'd check the the sensor and make sure it's securely connected 1st.

Good Luck!

Were is the sensor?

Speaking of which, were is the temperature sensor in the Mini? I recall on some of my previous GM cars it was inside of one of the mirror housings...

37 degrees Fahrenheit is the number. At that temp it will make a ding sound and blink a number of times.

The indicator does blink and a chime sounds when the outside temp drops below 37 F. There has to be something wrong, however, as an indication of -40 celsius (which equals -40 F) seems a bit cold for Malaysia.

You will get a flashing everytime you start the car below37F or 3C.If you start the car and temps. are above that and then drop below while motoring, you will get the flashing and a ding, warning you that temps. are dropping into ice range.

My 03 cooper S "accidentaly" switched from degrees Fahreneit to Celsius but the dealer told me you can easily switch it back by pressing and holding the Auto button on the climate control, and in a few seconds it will switch back to Fahreneit. You can press it again and it will switch back to C, or vice-versa.

But ktpang is asking about 32 CELSIUS, NOT Fahrenheit. I think you have a glitch, kt. Better call your MINI Service Advisor and ask about it. And let us know what happens!

If the outside temp show's "-40" [actually regardless F or C], it sounds like the temp sensor isn't hooked up anymore The way the temp sensor works, the display will default to -40 if it has no signal. You have to take the front bumper cover off to observe the sensor itself, which is on the left side of the lower grill.

Good luck!

Bingo Ryephile!!!! You win the prize. When the sensor goes out or the wire is broken the temp display will read -40.

I know this for a fact because mine was damaged in a wreck and that’s exactly what it read until it was replaced.

Mine has been blinking for months now.Probably have to motor about 500 miles south to stop thatI'm not sure where it bottoms out but the coldest mine has read was -47.5C At those temps. the displays take a minute or so to not look like this" - - -"The radio display takes the longest to "warm-up"

Sounds like that warm salty air has corroded the wire or connection from the sensor to the computer....just remember..."No problem man!!". That seems to be the answer I get about everything in your neck of the woods!!

It might be a computer issue....when you say shapes/etc shows up....is it kinda like electronic static? Maybe something in the computer is fried or corrupted? If you have lived with it for this long, heck, say it is lazy, and is enjoying the warm weather!! Sorry I couldn't help you more...somebody should chime in, I'm sure you are not the first to have this happen!!

IMO if it runs good, I'd just ignore it...especially if you already tried to swap out the sensor under the bumper cover. Kinda sucks, but heck, call it character!!
Maybe somebody will chime in with the answer from their experience!!
