Engine Block question
I bought a 08 Cooper S and 2 head bolts are stripped. I removed the engine and noticed about 8, upside down 8mm screws not bolts on each side on the block. Can I take those out and the top trany bolts and just separate and lift the top of the block up off the lower one so I don't have to take the entire engine just to get the re-threads done? If I can will I have to worry about anything besides the pistons? Timing chain is out already....tks!
They do here to, but, someone had used a sleeve and didn't screw it in, then made it wore by using thread lock on the outerside,, I guess due to where it has a big hole but then it narrows down to where the threads start, they never made it down to the threads....lol. So it has to be cut out first then tapped. I know, it sucked to have to take the engine out.....do u know about separating the block?

That Fricken sucks!!!! No way am I doing all that!! It wasn't to bad getting the engine and trany out, can't say I'll put it all back right, since it was half taken apart when I got it....lmao! I wish like hell, someone, somewhere will come out with a step by step on removing and the reassembling the entire engine instead of it being all over the manual that's not in order!!! I'm tearing out my 06 Volkswagen beetle transmission and looked under " transmission removal" and it states in Bold letter " This section has been removed from all manuals" WTF!!!??? RIGHT? I'm just glad as hell you guys are here, and I compliment you all for helping everyone out!!!!

BMW's instructions are in order. They just link at the top of each task which preliminary tasks are necessary. If you get ISTA to work (or access to BMW TIS), it's just a question of a few clicks. Very clear and easy to follow.

How do I get access to the ISTA or BMW TIS? I've got the electronic E manual which is garbage and I just got Haynes manual and it just seems that good....

I bought a TIS DVD in late 2010 that has all the then-current procedures -- no N16 - N18 info. Problem with this DVD is a couple torque specs are wrong and the DVD ONLY works on windows XP or 2000. If you have access to this old operating system, I can sell and ship you a copy for $10. It's been tried on newer systems, but so far, nobody has been able to make it work. PM me if you're interested.
TIS is the database with (the same) repair instructions and technical information as ISTA. There used to be a public access website for it but BMW had it shut down. BMW offers a (costly!) subscription based access to TIS to the public.
What "E manual" are you referring to?
I meant NOT that good above. E-Manual, it's for all cars but I've got the one for BMW's. It's an online manual but it doesn't have like a direct instruction, but it does have up to date torque specs. U have to look up that specific part then it will tell u the install in its most basic stage...and u have to downloada program to run, which I hate the program.. kinda sucks, but between that and the Haynes I can kinda get somewhere....I've got my engine and trany out and stripped down the block, now I've got to get it to the machine shop to cut out the threaded sleeve the previous owner put in and tap the hole afterwards( lol, sounds kinky) then I can reinstall everything. I've bought pretty much everything new to put back on like Starter, Alternator, Turbo Oil lines, Camshaft Position sensor, Mass Airflow Sensor, Front L/R Axles, New Turbo Charger, Both Oxy Sensors, Water Pump, Thermostat with new Seals and Sensor, Oil Pressure Switch....This way I hopefully ( knock on wood) won't ever have to pull the engine again...at least that's the plan.
