Really stumped, Timing chain noise only after oil change
Hi all,
I recently acquired a tidy looking 2007 R56/N14 Cooper S, and as expected I'm having a few issues with it. I've done an oil & filter change, and replaced a dodgy water temp sensor as 'eml' light was on as was the fan all the time, and my cheapie ODB reader pointed me to the suspect part during the day Friday , I haven't driven it since and today when I started it, it now sounds like a bag of nails from the timing chain area, when it was fine before (with correct oil level but grubby looking oil). I preferred the car with the EML light on, fan permanently on, and it not sounding likes it's going to blow up
Threads all seem to point towards a camchain tensioner, and I've read that under load it quietens, but mine idles fine and gets really noisy when I rev it around the 1.5-2k mark, I understand dodgy tensioners are usually the opposite, so I'm stumped. I will scour the forum for answers and suggestions. I did lose a small amount of coolant when swapping the sensor, which I topped back up, but didn't bleed the coolant, but I can't see that causing the problem. I bought a timing chain kit as my local parts store had a good offer on, but can't afford to get it fitted by a mate of mine yet, but it obviously has a new tensioner in it. As the car hasn't been driven since the noise started, is it worth me just replacing the tensioner in case that is all it is? I can do that myself.
Any thoughts, suggestions are appreciated. I love the car, it handles great and oozes character, even a trip to the local store puts a grin on my face
BTW I live on the Isle of Wight in the UK, we only have one BMW Mini main dealer on the Island, and they charge £50 to say good morning to you......
Ady.
