R53 Mini cooper s 05 Squeaking noise

Hi All,

Day before yesterday on the way back home my car went in into malfunction, rubber burning smell, some smoke and a high pitched squeaking noise started to come. I ran the code and it was crankshaft pulley code. Upon opening the pulley it was completely broken, so i replaced it. Started the car, it started fine, gave a little gas a couple of times and there was no noise. After putting everything back together to go on the test run, I started the car and it started giving me the same noise on the acceleration. As soon as I press a little gas Squeaking/pigcrying noise started to come. I tried belt conditioner and everything else to figure out if its the belt or any other pulley. My car has 85k miles.
I will try to upload the video in a little bit, for some reason it is not letting me do it right now. Any help would be appreciated.

What do you mean by "crankshaft pulley code"? What was the error code number?

Based on your description, it sounds like the belt is slipping because one of the accessory pulleys is binding. Remove the belt and try to spin each of the pulleys by hand (except the crank pulley).
When you find the one that's difficult to spin you've found your problem. If you're lucky it's just the tensioner or idler pulley.

P1688 was the code, I replaced the crank pulley and over the weekend I also replaced Idler pulley. The noise went away but then it came back again. Almost the same Noise, High pitch Squeaking/pig crying noise from where the belt is. I check the belt and it seems fine to me. It is placed properly as well, I dnt know what else to look into to get rid off this noise it is driving me crazy.

NOTE: There was no power issue or any codes thrown by the car after replace crank and idler pulley. Just the noise which is not stopping.

Your A/C compressor may be the culprit. Does the noise change when you turn the A/C off and on? Another suggestion: Get a mechanic's stethoscope and carefully try to locate the noise.

I tried turning AC on & off, that is not the issue, I have ordered a new belt. Going to change it this week and see if that fixes my issue. I used belt conditioner yesterday and the noise goes away after that for some time then comes back. I am just worried about my SC if that is going.

Although not an official indicator, the small metal tab on the belt tensioner is often used to gauge belt size/stretch.

How many holes are showing on the tab where you put the pin when you change the belt?

If less than one your belt might be stretched, or too big for your SC and crank pulley combination and slipping. More than 1.5 and the belt is too small.

With the motor ready to start, both holes are sticking out on the tab... without pulling on the belt tool or having a pin in the tab?

If so, it sounds like the current belt is too small.

As suggested in post #2, did you remove the belt and try turning the other pulleys to see if any are worn or making noise?

no no, they are not out without using the belt tool. Will try running the other pulleys and see where the problem is

IMO too tight a belt ( too short ) would place undue pressure and tension on the alternator pulley and other pullies on the belt increasing frictional heat and reducing the longevity of their bearings.

Allow the MINI belt tensioner to do the job it was designed to do.

Typically after a belt change one should not see two complete holes in that strip. And for the life of me I have no idea how a belt can be installed whereas upon completion of the job, two entire holes can be seen....even on a lift that would be a difficult task to achieve.

Seeing 1 complete hole and the beginging of the second hole peeking out or up to maybe half of the second hole would be my max....

Maybe go back over your work....ensure that the pullies and belt are all in proper alignment with other very good suggestions above...
