N18 crank but no start

Hello,

today i took a look at my friends 2011 mini cooper s. The car stopped running a few months back and the mechanic she took it to said that it needs a new engine. I figured id give it a go on my scanner anyway, so i plugged in my scanner and ran a diagnostic and here are the laundry list of relevant codes ive found:

A86E, E736, 9C59, ABEB, 931F, 931D, A0B6, 5E30, 5E31, A06C, 2D5A, 33FE, 2D55, 2D60, 2D54, 2C58, 9E31, 9C75, 9C90.

The codes range anywhere from a IHKA control unit fault, to low oil pressure, to uncontrollable VANOS gears and i don't really know where to start looking. The codes 2D55 and 2D54 arent giving me a good feeling.

If someone that is a bit more knowledgeable these codes could help would be much appreciated.

thank you,
Xavier

Have you checked compression? My money is on timing failure of some description.

Use this site for code interpretation:

2D54 and 2D55 are likely just the vanos solenoids. Pretty easy fix on those.

Some of the codes could be related to battery voltage being too low. If the car is still on the original battery, swap it out for a new one and go from there.

I haven't gotten around to checking compression yet but that was my go to thought. So if thats the case I'd assume it needs a new engine?

Oh ok I've changed the solenoids on mine before, is it likely that they'd both go at the same time? Also the car has been sitting for about a month since it stopped running so I had to jump start it with my car.

It is entirely possible that the battery is the source of all the issues.

I would start with a new and fresh battery, clear all the codes, and go from there. Make sure if the battery has the IBS voltage monitor that it gets reset with the new battery.

If compression is botched, you dont necessarly need a new engine, just new valves most likely exhaust.
