Battery draining when car is parked
Battery draining when car is parked
Hi Guys,
I have a 2006 R53. I began having trouble starting the car due to a weak battery. I replaced the old battery and things were fine for a few days. Then, after not driving the car for a couple of days, I found the new battery dead. I was able to recharge the battery, but it appears that I have a parasitic draw issue. I hooked up my DVM to measure current draw when the car is parked. After 30 minutes or so, the car goes fully to sleep and the current draw levels out at 32 mA. I think this is a reasonable draw during sleep. However, I found that the car will periodically wake up (to some extent). When it "wakes," I hear a slight whirring sound, kind of like the sound of a CD player or hard drive spinning up. The current draw bumps up to 1.3 A for a couple of minutes, and then eventually the car goes back to sleep. The sound seems to come from the center console area, but I'm not sure. My car has the HK stereo system and DVD-based navigation. I also have an old iPhone cable in the glove compartment with nothing plugged into it.
I have done a lot of searching online, but I have not found an existing post that was obviously the same symptoms that I am seeing. Has anyone else seen this same behavior? Are there known causes that I should check first?
Thanks!

I found this thread, which sounds similar: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...g-battery.html
I have not yet verified that the DVD drive is staying on and spinning the disk periodically. I'll have to investigate that next. Sadly, there is no posted resolution in the thread.

Something in my car pulls power from the battery, but not nearly enough to drain it on a day or even week. And my 05 JCW has the minimum in onboard electronics.
While my car will drain some amount of electrical power, it takes about 4 to 5 weeks to get notably low.
I have a couple of cars, so my Mini doesn't get driven every day. But plugging in a charger will show that even after a couple of days, some...amount of drain is taking place. If I don't plan on driving it for more that a few weeks, I will plug in a trickle charger.
