Stock Problems/IssuesDiscussions related to warranty related issues and repairs, or other problems with the OEM parts and software for MINI Clubman (R55), Cooper and Cooper S(R56), and Cabrio (R57).
I have a 2011 Cooper S n18 mini. I like so much my Mini but when I want to performance driving I have a High rev issue.
My ignition timing is going to negative(-13) and Afr down to about 10 (very Rich). It can't rev up to 6K rpm in WOT. I am feeling there is a limiter between 4200 to 4500 rpm. I tried everything on my engine. We worked to on ECU remaps (stage 1/2/3) different software tuners (4 tuners). Now I am using it with stock ECU software. I don't get any fault code. Normal driving is perfect. If engine is cold no problem, I can be Revving up 6K rpm. (for 3 minutes. you know Minis are warming up so quick) when It was warm up Problems are beginning.
That's my log video;

Hello again,
last update, I think I have a Super Knocking problem. Therefore I tried to the change my knock sensor. And My mechanic updated to the ECU software. When Updated to the ECU software Timing is better now. But Knock problem is not resolved. I added new log video. You can see other values. As far as i see My car can't go to the open loop mode.
I bought API SN Plus engine oil. I will try that. I hope it will be resolve my Super Knock problem.
In fact, my car was produced in November 2010. It is a N18.
In the second half of 2010, LCI mini cooperS started to be produced.
My engine is different, about 3 years ago engine crashed. some engine electric cables and front panel burned. They were replaced with new ones.
The engine replaced to the 2016 THP200 192psi revision edition (New engine HPFP is bigger than mini and different intake cam). HPFP and Intake Cam were replaced with the original N18 HPFP and Intake cam.
Some experts, ECU tuners and mechanic have tried to solve my engine issue but they haven't been successful. Now I am trying to solve engine problem myself.
I apologize to my language. Maybe I couldn't fully explain some of about my engine issue.
Hello,
I think I found the problem. When I removed the knock sensor on my engine timming(I didn't unplug it), then it is well.(I am getting code about knock sensor, and turbo boost code(2c58)) I saw there is no red threadlocker on my sensor nut. what kind of red threadlocker value I should use on the knock sensor nut. I tried locatite, now timing is better then before but isn't well yet. I am getting still negative timing. Can you give me your greatful ideas about my issue?
(I changed to the knock sensor new one, sympthoms are same.)
you should try walnut blasting to fix super knocking if you can. i am also a fellow turkish mini lover but there aren't many people around that knows how or even why you should do it. my n14 is around 200k kms and it barely works good anymore and i believe this is the biggest issue. you can check "minipassion forum" and ask to the guys out there, mini community in istanbul is luckier than other cities since there are bunch of knowledgable guys around. but still, generally turks are not aware of this problem. even borusan and other authorized services.
also, for 2c58, check vacuum lines, tighten every clamp you can see and maybe do a smoke test to see if there are any leaks anywhere. also, this might be related to the vanos selonoid, remove it and clean it, see if it helps.
Hello actasci,
Thank you for your response. I am member of mini passion since 2012. you can find me there with same name.
Yes you are right Istanbul has so talented services and repairmen.
But they didn't resolve my issue about timing. I went to couple of services ( without local mini service.)
My mini engine and other components are new. Almost everything are changed or tested even ECU. I got fault code (2c58 and others) when I removed the knock sensor on my engine. Normally I don't get any fault code. I ordered knock sensor nut(red threadlocker) on ebay. I couldn't find it in Turkey. They didn't order for Turkey before even Distributor of mini cooper Service. I will try the nut. I hope It will be resolve it my Knock issue.
If It will be not resolve I will try knock tuning with ECu software.
We again open cylinder head and checked cylinders.
Everything was so good.
Hello all,
Finally I solved to the my knock sensor issue.
The problem is knock sensor bolt hole. Before old owner repaired the engine. They were use a bad loctite for knock sensor nut. I cleaned it and I tested. No negative timing anymore.
I hope anyone see my posts and they will solved like their knock sensor issue.
Thank you who answer my post.
Hello everyone,
I apologize for not writing again after my problem was solved. 2 years ago my new mechanic solved my problem, but how?
It was a bit complicated. The engine was turned on again for the last time. My mechanic realized that there was no "Cylinder Head Oil Non Return Valve" in the engine. The Valve that should have been on the stock engine was not there. The Valve was installed and my timing problem was solved. The previous owner admitted that he removed the Valve to make the engine oil run smoother. But he didn't realize that the valve reduces the pressure in the cylinder head. My problem was caused by low oil pressure in the cylinder head.
For the last 2 years I have been enjoying a powerful and fast mini cooperS.
I really appreciate your comments and help.
