Idling Noise

My MCS 04 has a tendancy to sound like it is going to choke itself off after about 10-15 seconds of idling.

Does anyone else have this issue? Is it an issue?

Thanks!

Yeah, that happens to my '04 occasionally, usually after a good idle session. Tapping the gas usually solves it till the next time, but I am somewhat concered, and I have been meaning to get it checked out myself but I've heard a lot of people have the same problem, so it is common. If you upgrade to cams I heard your engine will bog a lot as well. Has anybody asked the dealer or now whats goin' on internally???

I been having this problem almost every other day on a fully warmed up engine (Sudden choppy, irregular idle) regardless of ambient temperature or having the A/C on and off.

This started happening since I got the "mandatory" V38.0 ECU software recall. Prior to the update, this never happened and I am 99% sure this is a new "bug" present in the new recall software.

I have already contacted MINIUSA over a week ago, but have not heard from them since.

This is a software issue with the new crappy recall software (Wish I hadn't gotten it) and MINIUSA needs to come up with a fix, pronto!

This is a software problem dude. Have you by any chance upgraded the ECU software to version 38.0, which is the recall programming?

Oh and by the way, this "choppy idle" problem seems to affect mostly the MCS, because my '02 Cooper CVT is also running the "recall" software 38.0 and the car runs and idles perfectly, so this is a problem with the MCS programming.

My MCS, otherwise, runs flawlessly, it is this frequent chopping idle problem that is becoming annoying and it makes me upset that the latest update 38.0 introduced a problem my car never had before!

MINIUSA, where are you?

I haven't upgraded the ECU and I haven't received a recall letter from MINIUSA. I didn't know there WAS a recall on the ECU.

Well, this has been happening since day 1, and I didn't get the software update until 6-7 months after I bought the car. It is on my list of things to check out the next time I take Fitz in.

i noticed the "choking" problem intermittently during idle. doesn't occur everytiime, but it does happen, as i'll hear and feel like the engine is sputtering. i do notice the rpms drop down to ~600-800 at times and when it gets to the lower rpms, it tends to sputter.

never had this before, only since getting the recall done. but otherwise, everything runs fine. with the jcw upgrade, which i had done at the same time as the recall, everything is actually smoother running than before. except for the occasional sputtering at idle.

one other thing i do notice is that when i am slowly rolling forward in neutral, my rpms will rise and fall. in fact, i can hear the engine doing this. and while looking at the rpms, it'll rise to ~1300 rpms and fall to ~800 rpms. then when i completely stop, the rpms will steady out at ~800-900 rpms.

On my 04 MCS I had the choppy idle BEFORE I got the v38 software upgrade. I have had it happen once or twice since the upgrade (about 3,000 miles), but it was happening a lot more before. Go figure. It's apparently part of the 'charm' of owning such a fun car.

Cheers,

I thought v39.2 was the recall software.

In any case, my car has also had this problem since the recall. Also happened after v38 was installed. Didn't do it before v38. Since I have had v39.2, this has occurred less, almost non-exsistent.

I believe there are other threads addressing this same issue but don't remember what it/they were called.
