HELP!!! Please!! Crank no start issues.

Replaced head and timed it perfectly. Put all back together and it fired up almost immediately. Decided to go around the block but at every corner it wanted to stall. Got it back home and stalled up the driveway and wouldn’t start again. Checked the DTC and got codes P0340 and P0365. Did some research and figured it could be a bad CPS sensor switched them and checked the codes again but this time got a P0342 and P0365 so I was certain one of the CPS’s were bad. Did a resistance test on the CPS and nothing so got a new one and it still won’t start. Getting the same codes as before. I’ve been without my mini for almost a month. Need good advice. What are all the things I need to look at? Battery was only reading 12.19v but even with a boost wouldn’t start it. What should I be looking at?

Not enough detail or diagnosis to determine the cause, but you must keep these 3 things in mind: 1) air, 2) fuel, 3) spark.

I would strongly suggest you to look into a compression test and also check out your pressure reading at the high fuel pressure side. If the highest fuel pressure reading is equal or below the compression reading, then that could be the reason you couldn't get it to start.

Hey Vexed, check your coolant temp sensor and your cam position sensor plugs, it is possible to mix them up both plugs will connect to either sensor. You may have plugged the coolant temp sensor connector into the camshaft position sensor by mistake. swap the connectors, clear the codes and give it a try!! Let me know if this works out for you.

can’t really mix it up as it’s a part of the harness. I suspect maybe the crank sensor could I be wrong? Maybe this is just a coincrbut when I was installing the starter my arm got sore and I rested the starter on the back of the engine on top of some wires. Possibly damaging the connector but I haven’t been able to check.

if your cam sensors are interchangeable try swapping them and see if the code changes, if the code changes to the other bank then you have a bad sensor. If it doesnt, you have another issue

Well. Couldn’t wait for a warmer day. Swapped out the sensors and getting the exact same codes. What else should I be looking at? If the camshafts at the source where the sensor reads is dirty would that play a part? If the crank sensor is no good would I get the same code?

Did some more probing and am not getting the sensor signal voltage to the intake cam sensor but I do with the exhaust cam sensor. Both have their 12v supply. Guess I’ll be digging into the harness next.

All wires have proper signal still no start! :-( Could it be the engine ground? I have spark I have fuel. Couldn’t check compression as I don’t have the proper compression tester. Any thoughts? Anyone??

A friend of mine was pulling hair out with similar no start (for months). It turned out to be a failed fuse block. He gave up trying to figure it out himself & towed it to a knowledgeable shop who fixed it in short order. Sometimes the pros are the way to go.

Thanks for the reply. Really starting to suspect the ECU. Hope not otherwise this Mini is at the end of its rope.

You can get ECU tested for a reasonable cost, should only take a few days.

Update. Pulled the valve cover off chain and everything else looks to still be tight and in good order. Locked the cams in place went underneath to put the pin in and it looks to be out by half a hole (3/16”-1/4”). Would this be enough to prevent starting? Also, could the chain possibly be stretched? Thanks for all the input.

Today’s update. Measured timing chain slack at 71mm. Looks like the chain is stretched.
