R56 slow startup after timing chain replacement
Hey everyone,
so about a month ago I started hearing the death rattle on my way home from work, I immediately took it to one of my trusted mechanics to get the whole timing chain assembly replaced.
After the timing chain chain was replaced I received three codes:
2DA2: PRESENT: EXHAUST CAMSHAFT: ANGLE OFFSET WITH RESPECT TO CRACKSHAFT OUTSIDE TOLERANCE
2778: HOTFILM AIR METER, OPERATING RANGE
2C58: CHARGING PRESSURE CONTROL: SWITCH OFF AS CONSEQUENCE.
my mechanic told me that he’d install the HPFP I recently bought for the car and see if that fixes anything. After he did that the codes seemed to go away for good but the car seems to be cranking over for a long time before it actually starts up. I’ve seen a few other posts about this issue after timing chain replacements but I couldn’t find any answers to the question.
How is the cars startup time affected by a timing chain replacement?
My car is a 2012 mcs
it has the following mods:
-aem cai
-jb+
-new Bosch hpfp
-timing chain+guides+tensioner

It is possible the timing is retarded/out. There are many cam timing tools on the market, some better than others and if one of the cheaper ones is used it can be a couple of degrees out. A few degrees may cause rough idle, loss of power and over fueling O2 codes.
Just a thought.

you wont get a code for slightly out timing until it goes out of limits. It is not the kit it would be the cam locking tool that could be at fault during the replacement. Worth him checking the cams are correctly set.
About a week after he replaced the chain (about 1.5 weeks before the hpfp install) he wanted me to bring it back to make sure it didn’t skip time, when he gave me the key back he said nothing moved at all but he did say that it could be due to the cam phasers. Could they be a reason as to why it’s taking so long to start up?
Codes = computer
You should ask if he relerned the system. When I put a new timing kit in I had the same problem. Timed it right and everything. Was so frustrated. Then I learned you need to reset the system because the parameters are now different. So I went a bought a computer tablet with bmws software and now it after re-leaning the system she has more power than ever. Also got gapped the o2 system so the variances are more to spec of my current running temp and fuel/02 output. The only issue I come into is the damn vanos system. It keeps tripping camshaft b over retarded. I think it's due to type of oil I'm using so I'm gonna try different companies and vescosities. And just FYI lol I learned the vanos runs on oil pressure relative to the seals on the cam, so if the timing is pushing the phasers to the limits then vanos throws a code. But if I'm wrong here please let me know.

There are also cases where that sprocket can completely fail, but I haven’t experienced it myself.
It’s also possible that the sprocket can slip from the camshaft itself or the chain skipped a tooth but I’d start with the small things before looking into stuff like this.
best regards,
Xavier S.
