P2096 Ground Fault Fix Question
Downloaded INPA. Get the correct hookup. Reset your fuel adaptations. An all other adaptations that are showing up Once you do that. Your problem will be corrected. You car still thinks the old sensor is still there. You can run the car for a while. It will figure out to correct fuel adaptations. Or just use INPA.
Thanks.
I installed mine on windows 10. Worked perfect. Driving for 3 days. No light. After I reset my fuel adaptations. I went from 22 mpg city back to 34 mpg. Just follow instructions on the disk for install. Remember you need a CD drive.
The slide switch needs to be set second from the end. Going from left to right. Right being the end. With plug pointing up

Just an update.
Thanks to Shreve I bought the INPA connector and software as suggested. Apparently driving for over 1 year did NOT clear the P2096. Now that's a real HARD code!
Installed it through the hiccups with Shreve's assistance & finally got the code cleared & got my state inspection finally done!
If it wasn't for Shreve convincing me to spend another $20 as a last ditch effort before plunking $400 for a New used ECU & programming that I didn't really need.
Thanks Shreve for all your help!

For best results a computer with windows xp that has service pack 3. That's has a 32 bit system
I did install on a laptop with vista 64 bit. But you will not have access to all the features of INPA.

Tried to install INPA several times on a Microsoft Surface 3 with Windows 10. Didn't have much luck. Came across an old Netbook I was going to sell but then realized I had the original restore disk with Windows XP. Got it to work and reset the fuel adaption and P2096 once but it came back perhaps when I went full throttle. Reset them again and it's been off for 3 days and about 60 miles with moderate driving. My emissions test was coming up in May but testing centers are currently closed due to COVID-19 but at least I feel I can pass now.
Shrevemini!! Mah man! I'll go ahead and change my o2 sensor and buy this $20 kit you have linked!
My mini always smells a little like unburnt fule, but am getting 32mpg the display says that, and if i do the math it is acurate. My resinator rusted off this week and i lost my flair for the tip of the muffler, and my garage door has a speckled black patch from the exhaust kicking crap out onto it. I think that's all because of the lean code/bad o2 sensor. But i'm not sure. What ya think?

This is a great thread and sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to it. OP - Glad to hear that INPA was able to solve this issue for you. I come from the BMW World and have used INPA quite a bit on varying models of BMWs.
I recently acquired a 2004 R53 Cooper S. When I got it, the Check Engine light was on. I was going to get it scanned first with a Generic OBD Scanner to see what fault codes there were. However, literally a day after I got the car, the Check Engine light went off by itself. I assumed this meant whatever code or issue had resolved itself. When I scanned it with the generic reader, I got this P2096 Code that's being discussed. The code showed it was a saved code, or it was in memory. Due to this, the car's monitors are not completely set and I can't get it Smogged in CA. I drove it about 100 Miles and the code still shows it's stored, however there is no Check Engine light.
I then found out I could scan it with INPA and plug it in - I was able to see the code stored in memory. I haven't cleared it yet as I was told I need to drive at least 200 Miles before this code will clear or the monitor will reset.
From this thread and some of my research, it seems I need to clear the adaptations anyway? Any thoughts and input would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers!
