Bad Gas Mileage on MC after upgraded software?

Hey all,

Just had to get my ECU flashed to the new software on Monday early. One thing I've noticed is that I seem to be getting realllly bad gas mileage now.

Is that a known issue on the MC? Or am I just crazy?

Your not. I've similar condition since my flash to V38. Most agree that the ECU needs to be reset after the flash but that hasn't helped my milage.

ditto...

after having the v39.2 "upgrade" my mileage tanked [sorry, couldn't resist] by about 4mpg to 23.5 mpg. seems to have crept back up a bit after installing a borla sport to where i am now getting 24-25 mpg in mixed local and highway. while it is a long way from the rock solid 29 mpg i was getting, two other factors may have been keeping mileage down, so i can't blame the software entirely. shortly after the v39.2 install, the gas in my area switched to the winter blend of 10% ethanol plus some other alphabet soup additive. now, temps are dropping as well. both could be killing my mileage. in a saab 9-5 that i just sold, the winter blend accounted for a 4-5 mpg loss each year [!]...HTH

Interesting... thanks for the info... I had a borla exhaust and a Promini intake at the time the car was flashed, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. It has been a lot colder here than usual, but it's not that cold overall (maybe high 40's during the day)...

Hey KiLo,

Let's get specific. What was your average mpg before and after the flashing?

My MC has typically been getting around 32 ish mpg as measured with calculator and gas receipt (don't have OBC).

Just got my first tank calculated since installing the 39.2 three weeks ago, and I got a dismal 24 MPG when I usually get 27-28 from a tank with the same driving habits. MCS owner posting in an MC thread...sorry. There's others (both MC and MCS owners) who have reported a increase in MPG with the 39.2.

Do any of you guys have a boost/vacume gauge installed? I've mentioned this "mysterious" flat spot in previous posts but got no response. While pressing down on the e-pedal during mild acceleration, the pace seems to slow when the vacume is decreasing going inbetween -10 and 0 inHg. If my steady cruising speed happens to fall into this flat area, the milage tanks This usually happens while I'm in 6th and 80mph. With the cruise control set, I would use the OBC and reset the milage to get an approximate "instant" mpg and it shows 19mpg I've done extended test where I would maintain this speed/gear then check the actual fuel used and it would confirm the OBC's estimate...19mpg

My theory is that MINI reprogramed the ECU to soften the e-pedal in this area in an effort to mask the yo-yo problems. But this seems to have created another head for the monster

Guess I'm one of the lucky ones. My highway mileage showed a big increase after v39 installation. In town mileage is about the same, but a lot more torque at the low end. Don't know if it makes any difference or not but mine was done at East Bay Mini. It's an 03 MC. Some of the guys in the club, NorCal Minis, have reported the same results.

Hey guys, thanks for all the responses.

I was getting just above 30 MPG before the flash, and I filled up my tank literally right after the flash. I averaged about 25.5 MPG for the tank. I just filled up again, so we'll see how this tank does.

I don't have any auxilliary gauges or anything, just BMP intake and Borla Catback exhaust. I don't push the car that much usually either.

Thanks again...

It would seem that this upgrade is for the good for those of us have a MC.
Those with a MCS may need to hope for a fix that fixes a series of issues that should not be happening. This is bad on MINI's part for not being able to get
ALL MCS's running great

When I picked up my MCS in June with 11K on it (02) I got 30mpg on the way home from FLA. After the mods and 39.2 I am now around 20 mpg. Things were OK until the TB install that cost about 4 MPG. I am possibly driving a lot more aggressive, who knows?

Yes, tried some steady speed observation last night. At 75mph, the Mini is not happy to be in 6th at around 3200rpm (it used to be purring fine prior to V38). OBD shows it's calculated load at 100% while the intake manifold pressurre at a big zero...and this is on a flat road Next, I down shift to 5th and resume cruise at the same 75mph at 4000rpm and the pressure goes to -12 inHg, calculated load at 64%. During both instances, I lock the speed with the cruise control then reset the OBC's milage to get an instant reading. 6th gear at 75mph equals 18-19mpg 5th gear at 75mph equals 24-26mpg

Am I suppose to take cross country cruises in 5th at 4000rpm all day long? Is that good for the motor?
