"Half" Engine Light

Mean Green
3500-4000 rpm. Stutter in top gear / full throttle.. WILL however rev to redline in any other gear with strong acceleration. Attempted the following
  • Turned off and on Sport mode - no difference
  • Turned off and on Cruise - no difference
  • AC on or off - no difference
  • As stated b4 - will pull HARD in all other gears with no stumble - haven't yet tried pulling to redline in 4th or 5th - but is suspect it'll run 90-100 in 5th (will post that result later)
  • ONLY in 6th - and ONLY if I mash throttle and ONLY between 3500-4000 rpm
I just bought this Coupe, and other than some tire issues (NOISE) that I first attributed to rear hubs / bearings going out (but was indeed tires), I love the vehicle. It's the 4th MINI I've purchased in 2 years because all the others (2013, 2008, 2006) were non S models.

Please help resurrect my faith in these cars!!!!

By the way - I DID get the "Half - Engine" warning light and the accompanying " Take to Dealer" message - after researching numerous threads I'm not quite ready to go there yet. Only has 65k miles on ODO - I'd expect a little more miles before that would happen.

I would find a good independent shop that knows what there are doing with these cars. Your local MINI club should know of a good indy shop

Do you have an OBD2 adapter? If not you can get an ELM327 bt dongle for $10, or a wired one for $20 with OTG adapter. Run an OBD2 diagnostic app that will log data while you are experiencing the issue.

I recently diagnosed terrible shuddering/hesitation issue only in a higher gear at low RPMs as a cylinder 2 misfire, and replaced all 4 ignition coils for less than the cost of a shop diagnostic. I had no CEL. Torque Pro logs many functions.

UPDATE: Replaced coil packs (all 4 of them). Noticed one plug that had the most bizarre crap - the ceramic insulator seemed loose - if I grasped the ceramic insulator and moved it up and down, the gap actually changed. No BS - it was the craziest crap I've ever seen. Anyway- I changed all 4 coil packs (of which 3 had already been changed - only 1 MINI branded left). and 2 plugs (obviously the "free gapping" one) and it runs fine. Does seem a little doggy compared to previous romp and stomp, but I'll need to drive a bit to verify. Also bizzaro - I could only find (2) NGK 95770 plugs through O'Reilly - NATIONWIDE. Really? Even with them doing a "comp" search. Wow......

Just the other day I jumped on it to get on the freeway and it started coughing and gasping. Half engine light came on and it ran like on three cylinders. This is the third time since new in 2012 this has happened. Had to drive for 3 hours before I could get home. Codes showed #4 cylinder miss firing and one O2 sensor fault. I switched the #4 coil with the #3 and now get a #3 miss fire. I have new coils and O2 sensors on order. I'm at 128k miles so it's probably time for the O2 sensors. I'll keep the good coils and my code reader in the back for the next time they take a dump.
