R56 "Half Engine Power" Light on Tach.
"Half Engine Power" Light on Tach.
I have the dreaded half engine icon light on the tech. No CEL present and no codes pop up w/ my basic scan tool. Car starts up and drives normal, just no boost.
I have a new diverter valve on the way, but not sure that is what will fix this. My current one, when taken out, just kind of falls apart. Nothing looks ripped or broken though.
Is there a special scan tool that I can use for this? I understand it could be a few different things (HPFP, vac hoses...etc), but wanted to start here.

I have one on too. It came on last night when I was out testing the car after a bunch of work was done. I had poor boost at the time and the light came on. Later I found the culprit was a loose clamp on the noise maker which when tightened brought back my boost but I'm still in limp mode. Not sure how to clear it but my scanner (icarsoft i910) arrives in a few days so I should have more info then.
I've been researching the half power light and it seems that many many things can cause it to happen. Anything from a bad plug to the thermostat.

Ah ok. Also - does your car run any different with the light on? My car runs and drives "normal" just no boost. No sputtering or anything.
limp mode is not actually a lack of "boost". the computer deliberately limits the throttle to limit power. The joy of throttle by wire, you are pushing the peddle but it isn't doing anything.
One thing you should try is let it warm up good, then shut it down and restart. My experience it never exits limp mode, even if whatever the problem is goes away after warm up.
FWIW Mine will go into limp mode if i try to take off too soon ( without letting it warm up ) in extreme cold (like 10F/-20C)

A bit of an update:
I haven't really driven the car since Friday when I installed the new diverter valve. I took it up and down the highway doing some pulls and seems to be working normally but the light is still on.
Unless the light plans to go out soon, idk. I will see how it acts over the next couple of days. Still curious on the scan tool though. If mine doesn't go out, it is still covered under the HPFP warranty in case that is the problem.

More delays boys!
Amazon / USPS / Canada Post has delivered my new iCarsoft i910 to some lucky guy in North York which is 500 kms from my place. I've opened a case but regardless it will be weeks before I get my hands on one of these things.

The saga of the missing scan tool continues. The seller, German Audio Tech in Cali, was forced by Amazon to refund me after they couldn't prove delivery. That was last night. Now this morning they provided a different tracking number that appears to be heading to my address but it hasn't been scanned in a week and the last known location was Montreal. They have asked me to give them back their money but I suggested that we wait till this wayward unit shows up, if it does.
Man it better be good after all this headache.

It's here!!
Yes the iCarsoft i910-II has arrived after two plus weeks of waiting and many e-mails with the supplier who is incidentally, German Audio Tech in California.
The unit arrived looking just as advertised and performed right out of the box. The menus are simple to use but not as good as my RossTech vag-Com in terms of available functions. That is to be expected I suppose as the Vag-Com is true dealer level.
I scanned my R56 and found three stored codes which were boost and misfire related. I knew I have a boost leak on the noise maker which I had already fixed so I cleared the codes and I now have full power once again. Couldn't be happier.
While I was in there I noticed that it will work on the older Minis as well, it will reset service lights/ oil changes and it will also graph parameters so you can observe trends while you drive or should I say, while the car is driven.
So a long wait for fifteen minutes of work but now I have a tool that will come in useful in the future as I expect that we will have many more coopers in the garage.
If you guys want me to try something with the tool just let me know and I will give it a shot so we can see if it works.
BTW
German Audio Tech was quite good to deal with through all this and I would recommend them to anyone.

Nice!! Glad it worked out for you. Can you link up to the item where you got it? I've sent you a friend request on here as well.
Edit: I've actually ordered the Ultra-Gauge which should be here in a few days. I plan to use it for various gauges but it also acts as a scan tool..etc. My half engine code light went out the other day after a few days of driving with the replacement diverter valve installed.

I actually bought it through Amazon.ca,

The ultra gauge sounds interesting, I'll look it up. Didn't see a friend request but I'll look into that as well.
Glad you issues resolved themselves. I just took the mini for an hour run to enjoy the power finally on tap. Raining like a bugger here so all our snow is melting. Hopefully we will get a white Christmas but you just never know.

All modern cars are computer controlled and they have ways to protect themselves when things go wrong. The turbo mini pulls back the boost as well as the ignition timing and the fuel. Cars that are not boosted generally retard timing and fuel to achieve the same result.

I did see something in the menu regarding TPMS but I will need to plug it in to explore. I'll try to find some time tonight to test this function. I know I'm not running TPMS on any of my wheels and I don't have an issue but perhaps the feature is coded out. I guess we will see.
Well my wife finally let me have the mini to try the tool to see if I could access the TPMS system. There is a tire pressure control selection in the menu but every time I tried to access the control module I got a communication error. So I'm going to have to say that they tool isn't capable. Somewhat disappointing.
