another yellow check engine light

So 4 days ago I got a gas cap warning on the dash after filling up the tank. I open and closed the gas cap and it went away. After driving for 1 day I got a yellow check engine light on the dash. The car runs fine nothing seems wrong with it. I know a loose gas cap can cause it so I reopened and closed the cap and I also filled a few liters of gas to get the air out just in case something went in. I also removed the battery for 1 hour to see if it will clear it...NADA. So now I am wondering if the gas cap is the culprit or something else. I am waiting for my code reader and I am sure if I bring it to the shop that will be $150 to look at it and clear it. Any ideas on what is causing this? BTW...I have a 2 year old gas cap so it is pretty new.

Is it the half-yellow engine light, or just the plain old yellow engine light?

Unfortunately there’s really no way to know without reading the codes first. If it’s the yellow engine outline light, it’s more than likely emissions related such as an O2 sensor or even a misfire. The half yellow engine light is a different animal and could be caused by numerous different things.
Edit: I have had the yellow emissions light come on before because the wire for the crankcase breather heating element on the intake was broken. Didn’t hurt anything to drive it that way, but was definitely annoying.

It is just a regular yellow engine light. If it is regarding a O2 sensor why did it came on after the gas cap light or is it just a fluke? I am waiting for my code checker to come and will post the code error here and hopefully you guys can help out. If it is the O2 sensor can I do it myself and have the code erased by my scanner or do I need to get the code erase by a dealer?

It could be several things, but that light is usually more emissions related than serious problem. So that’s good. It comes on for anyone who swaps a hi-flow downpipe on without a tune too. If you read the code then clear it, the light will go off, but may come back on depending on what caused it.

So I got 2 codes P0442 (evap emission sys leak detected - small leak) and P0456 (evap emission sys leak detected - very small leak). Cleared the codes and yellow out disappeared. If it comes back on what will be the fix for this? I want to do the fix myself.

Hmm, I haven’t run into that one yet myself, but I would think it probably has something to do with the gas cap or the maybe the leak detection pump, or possibly the fuel system purge valve on the intake manifold.
Those are just ideas, someone else will hopefully offer another opinion.

Clearing them and driving to see if they come back seems like best first step. Evap leak sounds like possible relation to gas cap, but not familiar with those codes.

Did you find out the cause of your problem?

Last week, I replaced my thermostat in my R60 S All4 (N18). Yesterday, I got the "close gas cap" message for the first time. Happened again this morning with a check engine light. The gas cap is tight. Will check codes tonight when I get home. I'm not a big believer in coincidence so I think it must have something to do with the thermostat replacement. As I was reassembling everything, I checked sensor connections and they all seemed solid. Are there any that could be related that I should check again?
