Timing chain rebuild questions, like replace anything else while in there ?

Hi
So started up the mini today and about block from the house it sounded like someone dumped bunch of rocks in my motor,Ive got 148k on it had it about 2 months. Had good service record but chain must not have been done. Im assuming thats what the sound is,ill tear into it tomorrow. its a 07 justa.

I have couple questions the kits I see on amazon some have 20 bolts in the kit some have only one

Amazon Amazon

Amazon Amazon

are the extra bolts needed ?

Also since im tearing into the motor is there anything else I should do ?
Was thinking about doing the almut blast to the ports as well,

thanks

The one with the bolts appears to be for the valve cover but it says new manifold gaskets? I would replace the water pump with one that has a metal impeller and the crossover pipe. They are pretty much done at that mileage. Many a MINI have gone to heaven as a result of crossover pipe failure and or overheating.

Justa's don't need walnut blasting. That is for turbo's with direct injection which causes coking on the intake valves.

I'd skip both of these Amazon products. Neither one has all the minimum stuff you need. Browse some of the NAM sponsors and see what they offer. Minimums are obviously the chain and three guides, but you also need the three TTY bolts (not included on these Amazon products) --- one-time use only! Then a front main seal. A new tensioner is recommended if it has never been replaced before. Need for new sprockets depends on condition of originals. And, when you remove anything with a gasket, that gasket should be replaced, i.e., valve cover, guide bolts.

Don't even think about doing this yourself until you've seen and understand the instructions --- Bentley manual or https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/ Also ensure you have all the recommended tools or acceptable substitutes, especially a torque wrench. If you haven't seen it yet, we have an illustrated parts list available --- http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/select It will show you what's involved in accessing all the stuff you need to mess with. Both sites work best with the last seven characters of your VIN.

While you're in there --- as suggested, water pump and crossover pipe if not previously replaced (altho I'd wait 'til the t'stat housing gets serviced). If the Justa has one, remove the vanos controller and clean its screen. Inspect your accessory belt and replace if it looks excessively worn.

SO I got the cover off put in service mode which I had read in other post and see now was not needed,,broke bunch of clips on wheel arches,,anywho got valve cover off and I dont see bunch of metal or broken parts,,chain seems tight. Im wondering how you tell if its been done and maybe something else is going on I thought id see borken plastic etc.
Car started all of sudden sounded like some one dumped rocks down the carb and started running like crap and I barley made it back home, Didnt sound like a rod or anything so im assuming it was the chain, after looking down in there and seeing everything intacted im wondering if its something else,,,or do they not normally break stuff ?
tried adding some pics so someone could maybe tell me buy looking at the plastic,,its brown but im not sure if it comes from factory that color or ? the guy I bpought it from had good service records but no recor

Here is a correct kit with what you need and not a bunch of what you don't. Same kit we use when doing the job in our shop.

You should be able to see the tops of the two guides mounted on each side. They aren't shown in your pics. There's a good chance they're broken off. Compare what you see with the link from Way Motor Works. Do you already have the cam locking tools? If so, there's a procedure to measure chain stretch using the pre-tensioner tool included with most tool kits. Essentially, after the tool is installed and adjusted to 0.6Nm, unscrew the tool from the block and measure the length of the tool, from the tip to the surface touching the block. Max allowable is 68mm --- anything over 68mm means the chain has stretched beyond tensioner limits.
