Is this an exhaust leak or something else?

Greetings NAM Folks... Hoping I could pick you guys brains on an issue I'm having..
After doing a head gasket repair + some motor upgrades.. I'm getting a strong oder inside the cab of my 03 R53 JCW when I get on it... Like when I get on the express way. It don't mater whether I have recycle air on the AC ON or off...
It kinda smells like exhaust but not sure. I'm wondering how to diagnose this issue? Is it a simple exhaust leak or possible something else??

When I changed the head gasket I also changed out/upgraded to:
15% pulley
blue fuel injectors
WMW Mild street cam
Exhaust header gasket
Intake manafold gasket
super charger service: the water pump side was completely dry so that O ring is probably leaking

My thoughts is it is one of the following:
- Exhaust leak at the gasket
- Exhaust leak due to cracked flex section of header
- Slipping super charger pulley
- Possible fuel mixture issue due to larger injectors (was hoping my JCW tune would prevent this)
- Super charger oil leaking into the intake

Anyone ever have this issue or know where I can start trouble shooting?

Just an armchair stab but I'm going with the "too rich mixture" at WOT. With your mods, you need a custom tune. Drive up to "HotLanta" and let Way fix you up.

Too rich mixture is one of my thoughts too.. How much does a tune cost?

He did mine so many years ago that I'd be out of line to say. Give him a call. He requires that you have fresh/recent spark plugs and everything in top shape. Entails dyno pulls and him doing his magic on on your ECU via his computer. Much better than a "canned" tune.

ok. I’d still like to rule out other source of the Oder before making a trip to Atlanta... just Incase it’s an exhaust leak. I did put new cooler plugs in when I did the work... forgot to mention that in my original post. a custom tune is on my to-do list for this car. I’ll send Way an email.

You haven't mentioned these but, IMHO, you're not going to obtain max benefit from your mods unless you have a good tuned exhaust header and a compatible cat back exhaust. I wouldn't do a tune until you install same.

It has the JCW cat back... Was thinking about a header but I want something that won't be too loud and won't cause check engine lights.. I live in Florida so I don't have to pass emissions.. Any recommendations?

Can a custom tune prevent the check engine light from coming on? if the header don't have a functioning cat?
