Cold Weather Quirks
Cold Weather Quirks
I have a 2006 R52 S that I have had for 5 months. I’m still learning all the quirks this car has. Well, I discovered a new one that I thought I would use to start this thread about cold weather issues that you may have experienced. If you have an unusual issue when the temp dips below 32 F, then let us know. Here is mine.
We had our first freeze here in north Texas. The temp dropped to about 25 where I am. I went out in the morning to take off and started the car. I didn’t let her warm up more than a few seconds (I know not a good thing), and tried to put it in reverse. The stick felt like it was glued in place; I couldn’t budge it with normal pressure. In fact it took quite a bit of pressure to get it into reverse or first. Fearing that I might break something if I continued using excessive force, I waited till the temp came up to full temperature. I said a little prayer and then shifted into reverse. All was well and felt normal. Anyone else experience this phenomenon or know what causes it? It hadn’t rained just a little frost on everything. Thanks I advance. Can’t wait to hear other’s experiences.

Also, if you are having an issue getting the gears to line up, try shifting into 3rd, then go back to 1st or reverse. Taller gear should be easier to line up. And make sure the clutch is fully depressed.
People have different views on warm up, but after 20-30 seconds, the car should be ready for gentle driving. Driving will warm everything up much quicker than just sitting.

Tranny fluid was recently changed using Redline. It’s not a case of the gears not meshing as I can put it in gear it’s that the stick had to have unusual force to move it into gear. Hard to explain. I wasn’t forcing it into gear it was just extremely stiff. Only time it’s ever done it and hasn’t happened since. I am waiting for a similar cold morning to see if it happens again. Clutch was fully depressed. I’m 59 yoa and driven manual vehicles from motorcycles to fire trucks that had to be double clutched to mesh gears. Never experienced anything like this.
Sounds like maybe frozen shifter cables. I had this happen in the first winter or two of owning my '04 MINI. Water can get in between the shifter cable and sheath, and then if temp drops below freezing they get stuck and you have trouble getting into gears until the car warms up and they thaw out. Can't help you too much with a fix, as MINI replaced my shifter cables and I have not had it happens since.

Scared the poop out of me. I was driving ~55mph in a blizzard, almost 0 chance of something impacting the rear window.
