Smoke and Oil pouring out of engine, oil lamp on...fearing the worst!!

Since you are only trying to verify that the cams and crankshaft are in the correct position, there is no need to actually lock the cam and you do not need a tool. Once you get the pistons level and the camshaft lettering facing up, use a small mirror and a flashlight to look into the hole where the crank locking tool goes. You should see the smaller hole centered at the back of the larger hole. If you see it, then the timing is correct. I only mention this because you previously posted that you do not have the locking tool kit.
