It is more likely the ball end slipped out on the inside latch.... It has happened twice on my 2007 R56 S. Pull off the left lower kickplate and inspect the release latch....the cable easily slips out of the capture socket which gives the lever nothing to pull against. It happened when my car was new and the Mini Service dept fixed it with zip ties... that fix slipped off again after 10 years... I redid fix with tie-wire. Good luck!

Did you even read what I wrote? You check the connection on the hood release lever on inside first... that's the thing you pull to left of clutch.... as that is usually the weak point.....

Here is another place to check. Sometimes is up by the latch, but check the one in the footwell first +1

You will have to put the front end of the car up on jack stands or on ramps to access the latches from underneath. The passenger's side latch can be unlatched by simply reaching up with your hand and pushing on the lever that catches the hood. The driver's side latch is more difficult to access, especially if your car is a turbo. You will need to use a long bendable metal rod that is strong enough to push on the lever that catches the hood on that side. I have had to use this method twice with success. I would recommend you look at some pics of how the latches are designed so you will know where the lever that catches the hood is located.

So, pulled the lever in the footwell and only one catch popped and the cable at the footwell was slack.
Google search = average fix 300-500 at stealers :-0
So, thanks to the wonder of google it is fixed.
In my case, my mechanic (that'll be me then) had not located the metal ball inside the plastic cable relay which is on the right side of the slam panel. I had this off for a clutch replacement last month. It had popped out of the housing that takes it from one to two cables.
So, to get the bonnet open... up on axle stands once more.
Good lighting.
6" flat head screwdriver and get underneath.
You can see the catch and where the cable is connected (black plastic). Adjacent to this is the silver metal housing of the latch. Get the flat head about 1cm on the other side and push towards the metal housing. You cannot see what you are doing at this point but go with the feel. Keep trying and it will eventually pop. Bit fiddly due to water hoses and cables but doable.
Relief and kerching. This was right hand side and above is correct a turbo will impede your access but keep at it...
