key bypass

Is there any way to bypass the key...like hot wire it. I ask for a legit reason. I purchased a hail damage car without keys to part out but i discovered the car only had 62k miles. I want to see it if it runs and if the tranny is good. Well i called the dealership and was quoted 300 for a fob. I am trying to avoid spending money on a car I am parting out. I really do believe it is not an option but have to ask to see if anyone has any suggestions.

thanks all

I am thinking without the key chip, the ECU will not turn anything on so the engine will run.

i was thinking the exact thing but i didnt know if i pulled the key slot thingy out and mess with the wires that i could do something. I was thinking i may have only 2 choices one being a fob from stealership or buying a fob/ecm/immobilizer set from fleabay. gonna call a locksmith here in a bit

There are many, many hours of reading on the key situation on this forum. Every one of them concludes the same. You HAVE to provide VIN, and proof of ownership to a dealer to get a functioning key. DO NOT waste your time and money buying a KSO (key shaped object) on line. There is a guy in here that does key repair but he has to have something to start with, pun intended.

i just pulled most of the dash out of the car and looked behind the key thingy and discovered it is a ribbon cable going to it. I think i have no chance other they replace all the stuff or buy a fob from the stealership...so crazy on these prices. I talked to a locksmith and they told me that was cheap for that...i told him he needs jesus where in the world can it be sane to pay 300 for a $10 item...talk about a massive markup...i get it but its just dumb

It makes it harder for someone to steal your car. If they sold simple replacement key bypass devices then our MINIs would be disappearing.
