Speedometer
Speedometer
Hi guys! I have a 2004 Mini Cooper R50 and my speedometer needle is stuck at 0. Maybe the needle got pushed in I’m not sure but I’m looking at getting a new speedometer but I want to know before buying one if I will need to reprogram my mini or do anything else the “might” require a dealership or something. Thanks a lot guys!
Do you have the big speedo in the middle, or on the steering column with the tach? The big one in the middle will cost a lot of $$$ and require dealer programming, unless you know someone extremely knowledgeable with this, and has the right programming software.
The center clusters (speedo, NAV, or Chrono gauge pack) are programmed with the VIN and options, and also keep track of the mileage of the car. The VIN is permanently burned in and the mileage can’t be changed to match your car. If you somehow get a used one to work, your car will now show the mileage of the donor car. If you get a new speedo it will have to be coded with your VIN and options and will start from zero.
The programmed options control the warning lights on the column gauges. If you get a used center cluster with different options, your column lights might not light up correctly.
Hopefully your issue is with a column mounted speedo which should be plug and play as long as they’re the same.
